one of the best things besides the animation of Pixar is the attention to comic detail. If you look past the cool effects and the kid story you'll find great references of character. Like why the sharks talked in a british accent, the clownfish without a sense of humor, and of course the obvious is there like the california turtle...
Its quick comic adult references and saracasm alone take cartoons and animation to a new level. Its a trend that movies and cartoons are all copying...
brilliant!

so why'd the sharks talk in an english accent then?

Saw it Tuesday. Really great, great animation.
But was anyone left a little depressed by the story? I don't think these days you'd see a live-acted movie deal with themes like that: Two happy parents, happy about having children, the mother gets murdered along with all but one child, the father is left a widower to raise the child on his own, the father is over protective and the child resents that, so the child says he hates him, tries to show that he is brave in doing something, is kidnapped, is sad, out of his element and normal home, wanting to be back with his dad. The dad wants the same thing while still dealing with his insecurities, issues of trust, etc. Eventually all is well but, wow, if that wouldn't be the most depressing and sad live acted movie...And this one was directed at kids...All I'm saying is, there are some pretty big themes in there, and it's odd how animation lessens the severity of it to some extent.

I wubbed it!
I thought the sharks had Australian accents because they were Australian reef sharks.
And animated stories aimed at kids should be hard or we'll raise a nation of soft crybabies.
oh wait...too late.

by the way..
I must have laughed out loud (ooh I spelled it out) atleast 30 times during that movie which is alot more than I can say for even the most hyped up comedy these days.

It was funny, don't get me wrong. The french cleaning crab had too few lines, but was really funny. I got tired of DeGeneres' charector a bit, but the short term memory thing was hilarious. The crowd was hysterical at that.

radiosilent,
I don't think that a trend, that's shits been going on in animation for decades. look at bugs bunny etc. Disney really took it to a more modern level with beauty adn the beast and aladdin etc. I find pixar does it much more cleverly though...see any big cock castles in the background?
