If you are thinking of the west coast, then the Tingle Trees, aka Valley of the Giants, is one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. You can go down from Perth through Balingup to pick up some magic mushies (different breed from the Byron Bay golden tops).
Valley of the Giants has some of the biggest trees on earth. You can drive your car through the hollowed out trunks. It is like being an ewok on the moon of endor.

I still reckon you should go east coast...even though I am a west coaster myself. East coast means less travelling as melbourne/sydney/brisbane are only an hours plane ride.
South of melbourne there is this great drive along the "great ocean road". See things like the 12 Apostles and stuff. But the best thing for me was the drive and visiting the towns along the way. There are some great hostels down there, and with a group, its a great trip.
I would also get into seeing some really cheesy stuff like the "Dog on the tuckerbox", etc.
Also get a movie called "The castle" out on video before you go and have a laugh at that.

just make sure you got a valid visa otherwise we'll lock you up in a detention centre in the middle of the desert with all the Arabs.
