hi fellow australians
I'm planning a 6 week trip to australia this summer (Juli, 15 - Augus 3). As it's winter in Australia I'm curious to know what the weather will be like, as I'm planning to go as a backpacker an travel around.
Any recommendations (not only bout the weather) are welcome, thanks.

The weather in Byron in July is mild.. no to cold, a bit rainy.. it's ok no worries .. down in melbourne it's getting 'cold' not very nice...so many places to visit..

Its always sunny somewhere in australia. If i was you id go to queensland as its dry season up there, start of in brisbane or byron bay and make your way up theeast coast to cairns, going to ayrley beach, fraser island and a few other stops, then from cairns head over to the red center to see the big red rock and them head up to darwin to go into kakadoo ( the huge national park).
Its winter here but its still 20 degrees and sunnyheres a good backpacking site
you lucky bastard

thanks so far guys
would you recommend renting a car, or just go car hiking or use trains and stuff?
- smartK0
also 6 weeks seems a short time for seeing entire australia, I don't wanna be on the road all the time. So I think I'll limit the trip to the southwest ... or what would you recommend?

depending on how your exchange rate it and depending on how much you got to spend maybe buy yourself a good ol aussie car. you'll pick up an ol holden or something for pretty cheap.
Old Aussie cars rock!!

oh six weeks
probably not worth buying something

get the train. most backpackers get the bus, why i will never know. The trains are more comfortable, you can walk around, go to the bar and have a beer, watch the scenery go by, you will be able to chat to the locals who will give you good advice on your next destination. I think most backpackers get the bus cause they think its cheaper but its the same price and you can get a train pass the whole way up the east coast.
Id stay away from the south coast, its damn cold there now, go from byron up the east coast, great weather and there will be loads of backpackers partying theyre way up the coast. The south will be closed and wet and quite.

If you looking for a less commercialized holiday in Oz head over to the west coast. Start in Perth, chilled out city, and work your way up the coast making sure to stop at Coral Bay for the best snorkelling and diving, better than the Barrier reef in my humble opinion, then on upto Broome, fantastic spot for a bit of partying and chillin out. Lots of other stuff to see and do on the way, national Parks, amazing views, mountains etc. Not nearly as touristy and party hearty as the east coast but depends what u looking for! Njoy!

thanks everyone
this will be my first time to travel alone ... but as I'm told it's easy to meet people, especially backpackers in australia.
what do you think? also from that point of view the east coast seems to be better ...

As a born a bred west Australian, I have to fly the flag for the west coast.
If you want to go off the beaten path, for example...why go to the barrier reef with all its tourist exploitation when you can go to Ningaloo roof in North west australia?
Also, south of perth (3-4 hours drive) is fantastic. Alas, it will be codler cause its winter..but nothign like a european winter for nut freezing temperatures

True enough, if your travelling alone the east coast is the better bet for meeting folk, a good idea would be to join one of the tour companies in Bryon Bay who travel up the coast and do tours out to Fraizer Island, The Whitsundays etc. I went with a company called Peter Pan, fantastic fun and cheap as chips.

travelling alone .. , u lmust be joking ?
in oz , west east north or south you'll find someone to go along, to share a room , a meal or a night with ;)
no worries mate !
- MR_T0
actually, to get the lingo right...that should read
"n'urries mate"

I'd like to hear more east coast VS west coast opinions ...
- smartK0
two more issues:
1. budget - how much do you think I'll have to spend for 6 weeks?
2. best time - I'm going for 6 weeks between July, 1st and September 15 ... what do you think will be the best time to go?
as you see I'm not an experienced traveller so I'll need all kinds of recommendations
- MR_T0
East V West.
There is more on the east coast...sydney, melb and queensland. So for your time, you can probably see more on the east coast and not have to travel as far. Australia is pretty damn big.
