I want to immerse myself into the world of sampling and mixing. Where do I begin? What do I need? I'm on a Mac. I have an electric bass, cheesy keyboards and drums. I want to learn how to mix it all up and experiment a bit. Where should I start...don't want to spend too much $$ right now...I'm gonna bring Torn Heart into the post modern realm. :)

If you're on a mac, get pro tools.

Is Reason similar to Acid Pro? Oh another goal is that in an ideal world I would eventually like to reproduce in live shows.
- BonSeff0
minidiscs are good for live shows
if you are nice sometimes bars will let you plug in the soundboard

reason is definitly the way to go
- unknown0
no, reason really isn't much like acid at all. much more sophisticated.

thank you guys for the response. I'll definitely check out Reason.

Another question: has anyone used the Oxygen8 MIDI software controller with a Mac? How does it work? Is it cheesy? I'm wondering if I could use that instead of the $400 midi box.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard really good things about Ableton Live for a sequencer that'll work great in the studio and on stage.

If you want a pretty cool program, look for Sim Synth. Can't remember how I got it, freeware or shareware or whatever. But it's interface looks like an analog synth, lots of dials and such. It's pretty cool. I've done sound effects for sites and background loops on there. Should be free.

Well for mixing real instrumenst reason is deff not what you are looking for, on mac my advice is get Logic 6 (limewire.com if you want to try it :)
Then get an good audio interface so you have more audio ins and outs, and you can record your guitar, bass and live drums.
Like the firewire 410 from m-audio
If you are going to record with pro tools, you can also get the M-box wich is a cheaper alternative.
Reason is great but when you are composing from your computer, the sequencer is not as good as the one on logic (logic is by far the best one for me).
Also sound forge wont work on mac.
Hope it helps

i have protools LE and Ableton Live on a g4 powerbook. works very well. make sure you have plenty of RAM though.

currently usin a midiman49.. good shiz.. also reason , protools, and two techs for samplin. use anythin else your wastin your time. although i wouldnt mind a mpc and logic..

miklo is where it's at.
Get logic - and since you don't wanna spend money you can just rip it -OI did i say that? *smack smack cookie*.
Yeah the oxygen8 is meant to be pretty good and probably recommendable - can be abit steep in price though I hear.
I use a pc70 and it serves me fine (altho you're going to need a midi box - which brings me to my next point.
Depending on how you write you might not even need a midi box -if you're using reason while it can be nice to have a keyboard to whack away on half the time I don't even use my keyboard to write shit/come up with ideas.
Look into getting a simple audio input interface so that you can record easily, get Logic Audio (protools is only better in terms of hardware that is of such high quality you'll never need it, cubase is just trash - i've used all three - logic has sweet plugins too!!), get reason but don't use it like a chump.
ahh yeah. maybe i'll shut up now.
