Well for mixing real instrumenst reason is deff not what you are looking for, on mac my advice is get Logic 6 (limewire.com if you want to try it :)
Then get an good audio interface so you have more audio ins and outs, and you can record your guitar, bass and live drums.
Like the firewire 410 from m-audio
If you are going to record with pro tools, you can also get the M-box wich is a cheaper alternative.
Reason is great but when you are composing from your computer, the sequencer is not as good as the one on logic (logic is by far the best one for me).
Also sound forge wont work on mac.
