blatant site copy

I am amazed at how sympathetic some of you are to this girl! If she copied someone else's work and turned it in as hers at UCLA she would be punished. If she did something like this at a job she would be fired. Life is rough! Boo Hoo.
I had a guy rip off my old portfolio a while back. I used to work with this guy! He even asked me how to implement some of the flash stuff I had! I turned him in to the "Internet MOB" and he got hammered! When his wife couldn't receive any email since their account was overloaded he had to come clean. I heard at one point she had kicked him out of the house for being such a shit headed liar!
Boo Hoo for him.

the point isn't that what that chick did was wrong, it's that we overreacted and turned into a mob.
There is ths thing called due process which organizations go through before handing down punishment. yeah, if ucla caught her plagiarism then she'd be kicked out--but not without a hearing, going-over the facts, and not with personal attacks. she has a right to explain her story, and serial killers have this right, a petty plagiarist should too.
there could be mitigating circumstances and explainations. ie. what if someone designed her site for her and neglected to note it was really stolen? what if she had the mistaken connoctation that everything on the web is free? what if the portfolio was for a small audience and never was intended for everyone to see--does that put her in the same league? if she never thought she was representing the site as her own creation (who knows, the portfolio could be a modeling portfolio), then does it mean the attacks on honesty are totally warranted?
the point: we had no right to do what we did. rips happen all the time. look at pirated-sites.com. yet if we're going to hang this girl then why not everyone else? especially when they are profiting much more than some dinky personal homepage/portfolio site?
frankly shellie, the fact that you made such a quick judgement on her and made up your own way to punish her (via confrontation) is disturbing. and that you quickly grouped her along with other folks/villians without hearing from her is prejudicial.

If a guy had ripped someones site I doubt people here would be as forgiving.
I've searched some of the PV-AN and saw some crazy rips on dudes who stole lesser art.
Do we feel bad now because she's a she? Would we be saying "Leave that poor GUY alone?" I don't know...

Without a lawyer the only thing you can do is embarass her online or send hollow threats. Sad to say, but true. Small companies and freelancers that get ripped dont stand a chance to receive lost compensation.

Aren't kittens lovely?

it's cool shellie - i can see your points. i've read alot of your posts on here and we disagree on most topics... i think it can
be boiled down to us viewing life in two very different ways. i think the way you feel is - you get to the end of a project and there is something physical, something tangible and you can claim "see - that's mine, i made this- here it is." whereas my
goal and fulfillment isn't necessarily in having a final product - it's more about the process itself and the journey to get there. that's all.but i could be completely wrong :)
- taragee0
and karma is a nasty thing - i trust in the idea that cheaters get it in the end

krts, that's bs. for one, find one person here who forgived that chick.
did you skip the "fight her then fuck her" and "she's a slut" posts?
- krts0
kpl
Did you read the posts saying:
"Lay off her"?
"She's had enough"?
"You guys are mean"?That's what I'm talking about.
- kpl0
temperance does not equal forgiveness.
she plagiarized. she's guilty. she doesn't deserve the abuse. these sentences can logically coexist.
- Gorbie0
I forgive her.
Eric Jordan does not!
- krts0
So you think there would be as much "temperance" if she was a he? Really? I don't agree.
- kpl0
especially after vitriolic as it had become?
please tell me another instance where a ripper was called a slut, sexually harassed, personally contacted and/or had the mob go after them as hard as this chick was.
secondly, justify this treatment morally.
third, what you're saying is nothing but a strawman. prove it or shut it.
- jevad0
you know...you guys really need to get out more...it's bad what she did but damn...people like shellie are taking it WAY to seriously.....
- krts0
I am not in any justifying what happened. I think it sucks. My point is again; I don't think people would post "leave her alone now" if she were male.
There is plenty of posts on this site calling guys who rip art fuckers, bastards, losers, retards, etc, etc... and the emailing them with such words. with not one person posting "Ok guys, let's leave him alone now." or anything else for that matter.
Look it up in the PV-AN or PBS if you think I'm making it up. I don't know why I would...

"I don't think people would post "leave her alone now" if she were male. "
I hope not, unless he was a ladyboy.

I started reading through the posts this morning, jumped on the bandwagon, then got to the end and realized that it was dumb.
at least it seems that we have now defined a more professional way of dealing with this type of shit. Contact them yourself, and if they're a jerk about it, then sick NT on them.
just because they're shifty jerks doesnt mean that we should sink to their level... its about being professional. I think if they don't admit to it and take it down, then as a communicty we should petition them... in more creative ways than saying "you're a stupid slut."
I'm not going to touch the male/female issue. I don't think anyone deserves an attack like that without being first asked to remove it, straight out. After that, again, we can band together and do something more creative than sexual harrasement and generalizations.
agreed?

If someone was abusing a complete stranger like that I'd stick up for them, male or female. She wasn't getting what she desreved, she got no actual criticism, nothing constructive (except for shellie's comments, which were both constructive and critical). I know if someone treated me the way that she was treated i would go and find as many sites as possible and copy them. That kind of weak name calling would do nothing but make me angry, any guilt I should have felt would have been swept away by those nonsense, sexist and racist posts. You should be ashamed of yourselves (u know who u r), you had a chance to do some justice and some good and instead you chose the easy route. Lazy, very lazy.
- corin0
Agreed preston, thats a very good point. I think a standard has been set, and i guess thats a good thing. Someone has to be the sacrifical lamb, i suppose it could have been worse.
- matt250
why do people always have to play the gender card or the race card or whatever.
can't we just see it for what it is.
i'm getting sick o this password problem
