Am trying to purchase a minidisc where its primary function will be for sampling. It is getting really hard however to establish what is going to deliver the best in terms of recording quality. While initially everyone says sony - I am really beginning to think that the Sharp MDs are the way to go. Does anyone have ANY ideas on what I should be looking for???
Thanks a tonne - i'm at my wits end!! :)

A sony and a good mic and your set. Sonys only down fall is that theyre a bit more expensive.
Sonys speciality is the minidisc.

Am after more specifics tho.
Was looking at the N1, but recently heard about a sharp with a preamp in it! But yea. tough choices!

SONY, without any doubt.

You could get a Sony MD hooked up to a Sony Mic. You are going to want to make sure you get the correct line-in tools as well, so that you can optically transfer data to and from your PC or MAC. I use a DAT recorder as well, so it's all relative, but before I used an MD, it worked quite well. A good set of headphones helps too, it gets bulky after a while and you look like a crazy person carrying them around. In the end you are going to need to use a sound editor as well to upload into, something like Sound Forge, Wavelab or Cool Edit even. Poof slice and export into a sequencer of your choice. ;)

Hey thanks for the replies but just sony doesn't really help. I am looking at the sony mz-n10 as a viable option but some top of the range sharps seem to have better facilities interms of recording sound quality - even having adjustable preamps etc.
I'm not new to sampling at all and am only getting a minidisc now due to the fact that i'm going to africa and the middle east for 6 months at the end of the year and need something transportable to sample anything I want - ie - dat recorded ain't going to cut it overseas.
i already have great headphones and tend to stick to cool edit, logic audio and reason for any sampling so i don't really need info on that anyway. thanks anyway guys.

what would be the benifit of a pre amp? would it pick up better sound form furter away. or would it just aply more bass or treble?

without a preamp you could find that your microphone doesn't pick up any sound unless the source is right next to it.
generally better microphones require a preamp.

I have a Sony MZ-R500, the sound quality is amazing!

i have three different MD players. 2 sony and 1 sharp.
none have a pre-ampthey all record about the same quality. the key is the mic ...
i went to an AKG c1000S. it's relatively small and has great sound on a pretty wide range. the mic takes a battery so you can power up the mic to double as a pre-amp.
the difference in quality between this and a bi-directional or faux stereo sony MD mic is night and day.
to be honest...try and find an MD from sony that's about 3 or 4 years old...i can't remember the model number...at the time it was top of the line and it has so many more usable recording features than the new ones have...i'll write back when i get home with the model number...it's by far the best MD i've had for 'working' purposes'

oh it's great to see some faithful MD users on here.........
:-)I love my MD.

......'right, and about the question, I think it shouldn't really matter with the current line of models offered from both Sony and Sharp...... but rather how good a mic you get (and yes, like someone said already, the better the mic, you start to get into required pre-amp territory)....
The Sony models are not necessarily better, but are more likely to have newer features and sound quality enhancements etc...... (read: new ATRAC 'types' etc...)
good luck, sounds like a fun trip

HEY!
Thanks guys, this is really helpful!!! So it sounds like a good microphone is really where it's going to matter.
The pre-amp option also sounds good but the one in particular that I'm looking at: the Sharp MD-DR480, is just so hard to find at a decent price (ie good sharp units just never seem to be on ebay!) and I'm having trouble figuring out which units have decent pre-amps in them.
Too bad all this stuff costs money! It's hard enough raising the dough for travelling let alone md and mic set up!!
Anyway, many thanks again !!
