This might be a stupid question, but how do you create pixely game-like graphics (as seen e.g. at http://www.tongsville.com/city/i… ) in Flash. Is there any trick I have missed?

No trick, pixel by pixel.

but why does it still run that smoothly and keep the file-size low?

Tey don't have that many colours because there not blending pixels (causing more colours), so they're quite small png's or gifs

well, they are very small files.
they can be saved as gifs or png files. so, they are incredibly small because of the physical size and limited number of colors.you can do them in photoshop. quite simple. there are some other pixel art apps too. MicroAngelo i believe is used a lot, but i am not familiar with it.

You can export your pixel graphics as .png files, sorry I didn't mean drawing all the pixels actually in flash.

thanks guys,
one more question though - when I import the gif in flash it automatically anti-aliases it. If I don't want that is turning the quality to low the only option, or is there another way (or am I doing something completely wrong)?

when importgin in to the library turn smoothing of .
then if you place the pic on stage select it, trace image and convert it to a graphicc symbol
voila :)

There's lots of issues with bitmaps in flash.
Most importantly, to create something like that game, you have to make sure you have your bitmaps on whole number coorinates.... ie. positioned on the stage at x10 y10 - not x10.1 y10.4. Plus, don't scale or rotate your bitmaps.
Basically, you need to get each pixel on a pixel. Kind of.
See?
Oh and yeah - turn smoothing off as previously mentioned for good measure.
