Just a question - anyone out there got samplers? been meaning to get into all that for a long time but haven't much clue - had a little look around and the KORG ES-1 looks interesting.. anyone got any advice for a newbie?
guess I just wanna play around with samples, with i/o to computer/ analogue multitrack..
cheers!

don't buy a sampler.
don't buy a sampler.
don't buy a sampler.do it all on your puter.
what are you on mac or pc?
- chikkapow0
pc - how come no sampler? :)
I've played a lot with some sound packages but just wanted something a bit more hands on..
I want knobs and switches to play with!!
i should rephrase that..

HOW BIZARRE!!
Lietarlltalking to my mate at work about seeing him at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday. Im not into Beck at all HOWEVER, BY FAR - the GRAETEST GIG I have ever been to!!! ABSOLUTE QUALITY!! I am keen to get a sampler like he had - does anyone know what they are called??
I too am a newie to the whole sound stuff and recently bought an M Box for my mac. That sampler (if thats what it was) was the bollox - I also liked his wurliter too!! How much do you reckon you can get one of those for!?!?!
Looking for feedback
Cheers
Karlo

whoa - yeah, that keyboard had a nice sound - was it a wurlitzer a moog or a hammond though!? no idea - that sampler thing tho, that's exactly what I'm on about - just seemed fun for home-recording, and time away from sitting in front of the computer :)
keyboards - ebay for £70? battered old things but if they still work then no probs :) samplers, seem to be upwards of £150 for half-decent :/
did he get up and do a solo on the harmonica at the Albert Hall? just brilliant!

p.s. yeah, I'd love to know what equipment he uses -I'm thinking it was a sampler with loads of drum loops/samples etc in it rather than a drum machine..
...anyone not quite as clueless as me?
- quamb0
i say knobs and live twiddling are far more fun then scrolling and clicking
- chikkapow0
I was just thinking of asking you quamb! -my money for the lomo might well go on a sampler instead! I'll just have to make do with my lc-a ;D
do you use one at all?
- beck0
Hi ya Im no expert with these things only played with them for a short period of time.
I was at the London Beck gig it sounded to me like he was using a Roland 303. Check out this site.

i have an Akai s5000
it takes about 1/10th of the time to do the same job on PC. actually a better job - the sound quality / bit rate etc is better on my pc then on the Akai
haven't used the sampler in over a year as a result

going to see beck tomorrow night in edinburgh.
i agree - dont buy a sampler.
if you are on a PC you wanna use some sort of sound edit tool like "Soundforge". Then you can piece samples together to make songs by using a program like "Cubase" as your multi-track.
Its a darn site cheaper (kazza.com - lol) than going out and buying a sampler. However if you like knob-tweaking you could do what i did (although i've not used it that much) and go out and buy a wee sampler like a Yamaha SU200.
I clip and trim all my samples on my computer then save to smartmedia card. remove card and slip into sampler. hey-presto - instant samples to trigger.
The neat thing with the SU200 is that it has loads of FX like distortion, Delay etc. And a neat 'cutup' tool that is good for re-shuffling beats etc on the fly.
It also has Cutoff/Resonance which allows you to tweak vocals/instruments like they do on dancey songs.

re: becks post about a 303...
...again, there's no point in saving up and buying an original tb303.
jump onto kazza and get a copy of ReBirth from Propellerheads.
Its the best and simplest fun you can have with music on your computer. 2x303's, an 808 and a 909 plus on board FX etc. To buy the equivalent in hardware it would cost you THOUSANDS!!I got a Roland 303groovebox a few years ago which is a good basic dancestation. It contains loads of different instruments, sounds and strings. and you can create sounds similar to a 303 using the appregiator and cutoff/resonance.
You cn get these pretty cheap these days. There are loads of different dancestations from loads of companies - its worth shopping around to see what you want.
go into the shops and play with them.

konspiracy - so is ReBirth a sample editing package? just had a look with no joy - but will keep on looking !!! thanks for the advice - as well as StyleJunky for both trying to save me money :D
and Beck for the link too :)
still undecided.. I've always like fiddling with soundloops etc in soundeforge & the like.. but I'm with quamb - the live twiddling is the diddlio! plus any time spent away from the computer would be good - spend far too much time there already.. :)
- karlo0
ok ok
So Ive got the mobox and Pro Tools 6
What else should I spend my pennies on??
Software or sampler - I agree knobs (oo-er) are better than the computer as I sit infront of one all day as it is!!!
What software should I look into???
- chikkapow0
I've just been reading up on ReBirth that konspiracy pointed out - looks very very good :) I shall be downloading that tonight I think..
- konspiracy0
rebirth aint a sequencer program like Cubase etc.
However it is programmable so you can sequence tunes on it using the instruments.
The 2 x tb303's make a noise like joshwinks "higher state of conciousness" a classic acid/dance sound. It's really for basslines.
The 808 and 909 are both drum machines.
The 808 sound is similar to BeastieBoys "licensed to ill" album.
The 909 is a newer machine - more dancey with fatter bass drums.Just for sheer playability and fucking around with - this is worth getting.
You could sit for weeks in front of your computer with an ample supply of dope and get lost in a world of acid basslines and fuct up beats without even looking at the manual !!!
- chikkapow0
tho I'm not too into acid lol!!! but I'll be giving it a good try :D I'll get hold of cubase as well - thanks for the education -
then I still might go for the knobs and twiddly's too..
something a bit portable to beatbox over & make some pennies:)
