Hello,
I'm going to buy a new digital camera in the near future. I have enough money to buy a 4 megapixel camera. I think it's going to be a 'Nikon CoolPix 4500' or a 'Canon Powershot G3'...
What do you guys think will be the best buy? It doesn't have to be one of those two of course... I'm just looking for the best quality.
thanks in advance!

aprils popular photography compared some of the best "point and shoot" cameras out there now...canon, leica, nikon all lost out to this bad boy...olympus C-5050...i have it, super sweet, great color recognition, incredible macro mode, accepts many different card formats, (holds two at once for that matter)...SICK camera, i love it, get it:

sounds good! Thanks. Do you have any pics online for me to watch?

dpreview.com has pic samples for most digi cams.

hey ganon -
how big is the actual camera? it sounds like its about the size of two decks of cards back-to-back, is that about accurate? maybe a tad longer than that?

I bought a G3 a few weeks ago.
It's by far one of the sharpest digital camera lenses and has an amazing amount of flexability right down to manual focus and complete manual exposure aperature settings. It even has a build in Neutral Density filter.

I'd say the Nikon is better for macro shots - really close up stuff, but G3 is well known for sharp outdoor landscapes, good indoor flash, and has currenty one of the best battery lifes of a digital.
ps. You can buy compatible G3 batteries from the battery barn that are more powerful and last longer and are cheaper than the standard.
ps. I bought my G3 here

thanks guys!
I think I'll have to choose between the Olympus C-5050Z and the canon...
Anyone else with a good alternative?
Thanks!

howbout the sony s85?
I had a s75, identical to the s85 except it has 1 mp less, until I lost it. now that I got a job I want a replacement, but I remember the pics I took were blurrier than what I would liked, and not sure if it's just because it's a 3 mp camera.
the g3 is looking really good for me.

FYI - the biggest cause for blurry digi images is camera shake. Use a tripod and you'll get tack sharp images.
The G3 has a "shake warning" signal that tells you if you hand is shaking enough to cause blur ;)

yeah. 1/2 of the time it was my stupid ass never getting a tripod. but the other 1/2 was me resting the camera on a table and still not getting the sharpness I wanted.
then again, the s75/85 are like two years old now... sony just came out with the v1... 5mp and $60 more than the g3... hmm...

I swear by the G3. Actually I have a G2, but its basically the same. Many of my fellow professional photographers who have used both prefer the G3.
go for it.

i had a g2, loved it to pieces until it was stolen.

the C5050 is about the size of two decks of cards together...i went to a camera shop and tested out how the nikons, canons, and olympuses "feel"...the C5050 has much more solid, well-built feel than the others, it has a bit of wieght...nothing compared to a SLR, but i am a believer in the advantages of a slightly weighted camera, which helps avoid camera shake...its great, saves in the standard jpeg, tif, and RAW formats too...has a nice wide 1.8 aperature, great low lighting...can hold 2 media cards at once...i have a 512 Mb compact flash card in it now, plenty of room for many high quality images and/or video....

I guess I have to go o the shop to feel and see the differences between the Olympus and the canon... I couldn't find a dutch site of a shop with the Olympus, so does anyone know the price of that camera?
I guess it's more expansive then the G3 because it's a 5mp camera
