If you had the chance to ask a high up representative from the RIAA a (serious and intelligent) question about MP3s and file trading...what would that question be?
I have until 9:30 to gather some firepower to take on a RIAA rep on the air...got anything you would like to ask?

mention the twisting of statistics about sales... ya know they claim that sales are down because of file trading, but in all reality its because less albums were made.... etc...
- mitsu0
ask them what an exercise in futility is like...
sorry, you can't copyright something as abstract as a semi-unique arrangement of bits.

complain that your Divx version of Matrix could be better if they allow an easier way to copy DVD's.

where are the actual HARD facts used by the riaa to back up there notion that file sharing is hurting cd sales..
considering the fact that i work in an office of mega code-head developers that have been downloading mp3's for years and are always on to the next p2p software...i thought it might be interesting to share that they all...and i mean ALL still by lots of cds...
we download music files to listen to stuff we like...mostly oldies from the 80's...push-radio style...
but when an artist we dig comes out with new material...after downloading to here the 1st single or so...we ALL tend to buy it...
so where are the facts...either that...or ask him why most people tend to care more about whether the ARTIST gets paid..and why not a lot of people give a rats ass if the suits and distribution get a damn penny...

not only that, but sales for 'major' labels was down slightly but sales of indi label music was way up evening out the sales stats...
come on people, i KNOW 99.9% of you all download and share music...this is your chance for a voice...for WHY

Is the RIAA in any way responsible for that damn copyprotection some new cd's have?
If they are, ask them why I'm not allowed to make a backup of the cd's I buy, and why they use copyprotection technology that makes the cd useless on some cd players...
- Danski0
Ask them how they justify the cost of a CD in the current marketplace, and furthermore how they justify all the stages in production that inflate that cost.
- Danski0
oh and make an MP3 for us :P
- mrdobolina0
How can they justify calling themselves the RIAA when they only represent a few big labels and dont have any indie members?
- mitsu0
hmm, most ppl i know who d/l mp3's don't buy the cd's... but who cares...
it's a new era. no longer will artists and record labels make gazillions of dollars on cd's... now they'll have to resort to ticket sales. does this mean it'll flush out all those who get into the industry for money, leaving only those who do it for the love of music??? if so, then let's all start d/ling more mp3's!

Thank you all for your ideas. I was able to ask about the indie sales stats and how the riaa justifies supporting copyright protection schemes that harm other industry applications - such as cd's not playing, not being able to make backups, etc...he skated around those issues slightly....
but he did mention that if an indie music label or muscician wants to give away his music freely online that is ok.
it was only a 15 minute on air phone interview, so there wasn't much time to really dig deep...
thanks again for the help...
:)
