Thank you all for your ideas. I was able to ask about the indie sales stats and how the riaa justifies supporting copyright protection schemes that harm other industry applications - such as cd's not playing, not being able to make backups, etc...he skated around those issues slightly....
but he did mention that if an indie music label or muscician wants to give away his music freely online that is ok.
it was only a 15 minute on air phone interview, so there wasn't much time to really dig deep...
