take a look at this:

ok, so what are the tools of the trade for creating this type of work? from the cameras that capture the video to the software that edits it.
a brief rundown on the process would be nice too - or at least some links to resources for this kind of info.

just having a good understanding of Audio and realizing that audio and video act much like each other you could use a bunch of different things. OK maybe something like this. Record with a nice DV (Digital Video) Recorder that's either lined into your machine as you are filming or independently filming. You could edit that video with many different applications such as Adobe Premiere, however, to be honest programs such as Vegas Video from Sonic Foundry do the job just as well for 90% of projects. I think even Acid Music Pro can import and sequence audio to video etc. This is my guestamation. :)

haters!
- 4cY0
oh sorry...
180 degrees is good tho.
- 4cY0
hey!!!
wait a minute!
isn't 180 degrees just flipped around?
that's not original!
i recommend you add 62.5 degree arrows, ok?
- renascent0
4cY you talk to much shit.
de beste stuurlui staan aan wal, heh?
- xrusos0
i recommend 135 degree arrows.
or if you're in a bind, a 225 will do.

what is "bump" ?
- j_red0
'bump' moves the post to the top of the list...see?
- mitsu0
it's just a way to move a thread up to the top to get more recognition. the word 'bump' itself is universally understood... well, it's getting there anyway.
- j_red0
If the bump you are inquiring about is on your booty you should get it checked out.
- schjetne0
I think it's an abbreviation of
*Bring
*Up
*My
*ThreadI think I read that in some "How to be a good internet forum nerd" faq...

my 2 bits
1. buy, borrow or rent a half decent DV camera. The sony DCR-VX2000 is an awesome choice, but there are less expensive models from other brands which are great too.
2. Aquire and do some tutorials in final cut pro (apple just released a $300 version which has most of the features you will need) or adobe premier if you use a PC
3. Aquire and learn to use adobe after effects. no shortcut here, just gotta bang away at it.
4. Aquire and learn to use something like protools or even just sound forge. get a stereo microphone from J+R audio video for 40 bucks, its worth it (dont bother looking at radio shack, their mikes are SHIT and cost as much as a decent one from a repuatable company)
5. Now that you have the equiptment and software, get a feel for how they can be used together (try importing a wav into final cut and laying it over some video, bring a text graphic clip from after effects into final cut and apply a trasition from it to a video clip)
6. WRITE A SCRIPT
it doesnt have to be a 'story', but your work will be 100 times more interesting if you can describe what you want to do on paper first.7. make a storyboard - map out most if not all of your planned shots (roughly) with sketches in sequence.
8. now shoot video and record your audio. these things do not have to happen simultaneously, especially if there is not dialogue in your video.
Now, if you want to make a montage like that gmunk piece, you can skip all the planning and just go out and shoot like you would go take photographs...but, to be honest, all due respect to gmunk (work kicks ass), that video doesnt do anything for me...PLANNING and PURPOSE always show through when it comes to video. Learning to edit and shit by making montage is fine, but, use it as a learning project, not as the only style of work you make.
of course, it all depends on what you want to do...there are some nice piecemeal edited clips...but video art is more sophisticated now than it has ever been, and viewers are not that impressed by fast editing and 'real life' style clips - they see it everywhere. Creators who have a real message, a point are much more effective IMHO.
