ya, just watched the movie to see if i could figure him out. Never could in college, always thought it was original but I never understood it.
All I got from the movie is that he was a drunk who went nuts but somehow became understood but no-one could explain how/why.
Im even more confused.

Nah get "invincible" with billy zane. Who else would you cast for an alleged kung-fu movie? I nearly killed myself after watching that.

I actually liked the movie a lot, it's amazing how european it looks in some scenes, like the scene where he's eating dinner with his parents.
There's another scene where the daily morning ritual is portrayed; Pollock gets out of bed, his wife gives him a cup of coffee, he puts on his jacket and walks through the snow towards the little shed where he paints. Suddenly discovering a new way of painting. As a painter I only think he's interesting as a part of art history.
But there are things to be inspired from as a designer, especially the complex compositions.

Pollock is important for several reasons. I havent seen the movie and am unsure of how they portray him as man. In fact, I think to some extent it is irrelevent from an art history standpoint. His work is important enough to stand alone without the context of his lifestyle. From what I have learned, Pollock was a precursor to performance art. The process he took for his work was just as important if not more than the actual finished product. He documented extensively the proccess. He compared it to rituals similar to aboriginal ceremonies. I dont think you can seperate the two. Also, Pollock continued to exploit the "de-skilling of the artist" which really began to take foothold during impressionism and reached its pinnacle wih duchamp and "the fountain". But, like i said, i havent seen the movie and not sure what they say about his work.

ya i guess you can say that..

Together with Francis Bacon, two of the most important artists of the last century.

[the "de-skilling of the artist" which really began to take foothold during impressionism] hmm, maybe in fauvism, but not impressionism...
anyway with Pollock I think it also helps to check out his early work. Then you can see a lot of continuity visually. Before he started using drips his compositions were all tangled and crazy like that
... also, Thomas Hart Benton was his teacher obviously a totally different kind of paintings, but actually if you start to abstract that painting, it's not too far from a pollock...

I liked his work but I think he put too much into trying to get famous.. changing his style up and all. but you gotta hand it to anyone who makes it off dripping paint.
I liked the movie too. The ending was great.

Of course im sure the argument can be made for both cases, i can recall several clear examples of de-skilling in impressionism. An often overlooked one is a sculpture done by degas in which he used a pre-fabricated tutu for the ballerina. The very nature of impressionism illustrates the my point. The impressionists were often criticized for painting like amatuers or having a less formal more crued manner of painting which made being an "artist" less of a skill or craft as it was seen in those times.

Yeah, that's true Kiubo,
...in retrospect it's hard to say that the impressionists lacked any craft, but yeah at the time it did seem that way.

its portreyed like he fluked that whole style of his. He saw a splatter on the ground and though, 'fuck it, i just might get away with this', and he did.
