    [the "de-skilling of the artist" which really began to take foothold during impressionism] hmm, maybe in fauvism, but not impressionism...

    anyway with Pollock I think it also helps to check out his early work. Then you can see a lot of continuity visually. Before he started using drips his compositions were all tangled and crazy like that

    ... also, Thomas Hart Benton was his teacher
    obviously a totally different kind of paintings, but actually if you start to abstract that painting, it's not too far from a pollock...
