to the boys and girls who has bought this machine:
how much did u spend $ on it?
and have u had any trouble with it?
i read something about cracks in the screen.

i bought a new 15 incher right before the 17 came out (had i waited two weeks, i could have bought the 17 for about 300$ more than i paid for the 15, DOH!). Anyway, the only problem i've had with regards to the screen is that when the powerbook is shut for a long time it leaves an impression of the keyboard on the screen, in dust. Someone poste a link on here to buy little pads to put between the keyboard and the screen to stop this. Do a search, i'm sure it will turn up.

I was thinking about buying the 17inch too, but it's listed as $5,299.00 canadian. Prbably $6000 with the taxes.
is it as fast as a desktop?? I've only worked on a power book G3 and it's alright, but now I need something more powerful and faster

the 15 incher i have is a 1ghz machine and it is every bit as fast... or a little faster than what I've used in the past.

I want the 17" bad. great thread! More crits!

it looks sweet! Is the DVD /cd player removable on the 15"? I'm just worried about the CD writer breaking and having to take the entire machine to service.

i too am about to buy a 15" - "Simultaneously supports up to 1024 by 768 pixels on the built-in display and up to 1600 by 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors" - f**kin' sweet. it'll look good on my 22" monitor.
i have no idea about the DVD/CD player, but you can always get a better/faster external LACIE for a few extra $$.i'm just looking forward to being mobile.
great thread!

yeah Laptops are so liberating. The only thing I get scared is dropping and smashing it.

piper - if i'm spending 5k on a laptop, that shit's never touching the ground!

true, but accidents do happen.
I had my G3 Power book for 3 years now and it's still in good shape. That's because I rarely bring it out.Does anyone know how long the batteries last for? mine only 4 hours.

The screen/keyboard thing happened since the old G4 powerbook though...
and it still happening...sheesh.

i have the 17". a couple of comments...
i bought it from macwarehouse.com (ask for David Rosario and tell him that Ryan sent you and he'll hook you up with some sort of discount)
i spent $3294. they gave me 512MB RAM, an extra battery (offer is gone now), and free shipping.
they have them in stock.
as for the machine...
it is simply beautiful. it runs fast. the screen is unbelievable... viewable from all angles (really!). i usually work on 2 17" CRT's, but i haven't even hooked the powerbook up to a second monitor yet... haven't needed too... (and i've been working from various coffee houses/bookstores lately). keyboard is awesome as well. illumination is very sweet.any more specific questions, let me know. but i am very, very satisfied with my purchase. i'm telling you, if you want a laptop, spend the extra change and get the 17.
(and call dave rosario at macwarehouse to get a discount 800.622.6222 ext. 61720 - at least call to see what he can do for you.)

oh, and the screen/keyboard impression thing when you close it on old powerbooks ISN'T AN ISSUE on the new 17". they've finally fixed it! the screen is recessed a bit, and the keyboard doesn't protrude as much. and there is a small gap of air there anyway.
i was worried about that too. but thankful i don't have to deal with any covers or anything.

Laptop is the next thing on the list for me.. and I really want the 17"er because.. well.. its fucking sweet to say the least.. but I really want some true power.. for the $, I can't go past some of the faster sony viao's.
discuss $/power

anybody have protools 6 on their powerboofk g4?
- J_Treehorn0
Doesn't Protools 6 require it's own hardware audio pre-processor?
- tiggy0
i believe so, it comes with the software. I know the pro tools mbox works on the powerbooks, not sure about the digi 001 and digi 002. just wodering if anyone has fucked with any of this and had any problems.
- J_Treehorn0
Forget the mbox, it's hooey. The only thing I know that works is this: http://www.magma.com/
