what are my options to convert vhs tapes to digital video on a mac?
i'm looking for a consumer product (as opposed to expensive pro products).
what do you think of El Gato's eyeTV? resolution seems small (320x240) but you can record tv shows too...
what a reasonable resolution i should look to get out of a vhs tape?
ultimate goal: to turn old family video's into editable movies in iMovie and ultimately in iDVD. i want to give family members a dvd of fun family times caught on tape.
added bonus: ability to record tv shows onto my mac.
system: mac os x
hardware: powerbook G4 17

You might want to rent a hi end digital camcorder. If you're only going to do this once and have it the rest of your life, spring for it.

i am converting "old" video tapes (vhs) to digital. "not" filming a new event.
i agree with filming all new stuff with a quality dv camcorder. but how do i get my old stuff to digital?
basically, i need a video "in" on my powerbook. but what are my options here? anyone else?

dazzle's a good consumer product - it does the job and it's cheap. If not a lot of miniDV camcorders have a pass through on them which means you can run your VCR out's into the camera and convert them to firewire which your Mac can digest and turn into DV movies (at 720x480).

does dazzle work on a mac? i don't know why it wouldn't, but it says windows xp, etc. but doesn't say mac.

the positive:
Video Resolution
NTSC: Up to 720 x 480question: is this the best possible? is this more information than can even be received from old vhs? (ie, is 320x240 the real resolution of old vhs and 720x480 is overkill and not usefull)
does this make any sense?

and/or can you recommend a good dv camcorder that has a "pass through" on it so i can run my vcr out's into the camera and convert them to firewire which my mac can digest into DV movies?

Canon ZR 60 has analogue - digital converter ability.
http://www.canondv.com/zr60/f_vi…
"Composite / S-Video input and output with Analog to Digital Converter -
By using audio/video cables (composite) or S-Video, it's possible to send an analog video signal from your TV, VCR or a camcorder into the ZR60 and record it onto DV. Similarly, you can output an analog signal via composite or S-Video cables to an analog device such as a TV or VCR."

dude i think you can record through your vcr to a miniDV cam or deck and then through firewire to your computer...im not positive though...

dazzle recommends this product:
http://www.dazzle.com/products/d…but it says the highest resolution is:
NTSC: 352 X 240
PAL: 352 X 288that's not too good. but is that the best i can expect from analogue video?

720 x 480 is actually a standard size for a good quality. more than that is usually used for HD tvs.

rent a minidv camera, tape the stuff unto it from vhs then if you have fire wire capture it that way...personally i'd think it's useless to get an analogue - digital converter for only a little bit...get fire wire and never look back
