    Hi ,

    guys , i need help PLEASE !.

my partner got in touch with a soon to open night club owner , he want us to make the website.

When my friend told me this , i was very happy cuz i always wanted to do this . thought it would be a great project and allow me to do something nice and not too corporatish for once.

But then he told me some details and im completely unhappy with this.

This is what my partner agreed to without even talking to me.

First for next week , i have to do a demo , ok , thats cool , i can handle it , just give me the pictures , logo and all. Well they dont have any pictures of the club yet. well shit , wtf ? i mean , this is the kind of site where you base the design around the pictures avaible right ? ok fine , ill do it anyways , but wait ,how much we getting paid for this ? NOTHIN ? what ? how come ? well they want to see the demo first , then , they will let us make the entire site ( completely flash btw , demo too ) and give us the pictures and the info to put in the site.

So basicaly after the demo , once i have all the pictures and content ill have to almost make another complete design ...

I mean this is bullshit , i have no ideal what the club looks like too and even if i go visit it , well its in renovation ( it will open in 1 month or so ) ... and on top of all, i dont get 1 $ out of this ?

So anyways i told my partner/friend , that like all the cool website from nightclubs have like nice photos that make the basis of the design and stuff .. and im fucking sick of doing work with some FICTIONAL logo , and white space image goes here , and no content and its fucking anoying.

So what would you do ?

On one end , it would be good publicity i guess for us , even if the total contract would be only like 3000$ max ( canadian ) for the entire site.

but on the other hand ,im so sick of shit like that working with no actual content, and last time i swore i wouldnt do it anymore.

what do you guys think ?
My partner is mad at me , and says i dont have a choice.

this is one of the websites i know from night clubs , i bet they didnt have all the content + image only AFTER they did the design tsss , do you know any other cool ones ? id like to see some.

    DONT DO SPEC WORK!!!

you have to get paid for your work, even a demo, or else your selling the whole damn industry short.

is the club owner spec-ing the project out to other designers as well? are you competing? if so, demand payment [something small up front to cover your time and effort and creativity]. if not, there should be a contract before you do anything

at least get trade credit or something for when the club opens, just don't give it away.

Why not design/concept the site around the music which the club will be playing...

...there'd be plenty of material to work with that way. Isn't that what punters want to know...?

  • thecrab0

clubpeeps are bad to work for
    they live in another world
    trust me

  • sherman0

cover your ass - people will smack it hard if they get the chance. set-up a new meeting.

  • Louno0

thats right , its against the industry , and no i dont think there is anyone else right now who is working on a demo , pretty sure about that , but i could be wrong :)

and what about the lack of pictures and stuff... i mean... in my head if i picture a night club website , i think the design should absolutely be based around the images , to get the feel and atmosphere of the club.

but about the demo yeah im very not happy about doing these things for free..
i did a really tiny demo last time for another company , again with absolute no content , it was a pain in the ass took me some time to do it and its not even very nice . http://www.louno.com/foretbleue/… . The client said it was nice , but did said they would wait a little to make the full site. so its been MONTHS and still to this day didnt get the contract yet , and im pretty sure they wont call back , so i did that demo for nothing not 1 $. pisses me off. I would have loved to do the full site.

  • sherman0

you know what you need to do.

  • Louno0

    well actualy i dont .

First if i dont do it , my friend is mad at me, he doesnt see it the way i do , he see it has a big opportunity for our us to start ( we are now a company , before we were just freelancers .. well i still am , and he still works in a studio he is the integrator ).

Then i lose maybe a great opportunity cuz maybe for now they only pay 3000 for the full site, but everytime they want to make updates , or if they want to make flyers , and stuff , they probly come back to us.

Also, it would be some good publicity for us. Having our link at the bottom of that site ... if the site is cool of course .

    But on the other hand.
Its sooo wrong . Im sick of these kinds of jobs.
And if the demo isnt cool egnough for them , then we dont have the contract and that sucks.
    ...

I would do the demo i think even if i dont like it , if i had some nice pictures of the club even if i wasnt getting paid first, cuz id feel more confortable doing it , and id know that i wouldnt have to start all over again once i got the pics to make my design match.
Id also do it for sure if i was getting paid , even with no pics , then if they like it or not its not a problem cuz at least i got paid.

But i really dont know . I know before i would have done it and shut my mouth . But im getting sick of this. I dont make alot of money with design, i get like only 1 contracts every 2 months or so , so id be tempted to take anything that comes.

The not having pictures of the club really annoys me. id say even more then not getting paid.
I feel id do something nicer and increase the chance of us getting the contract if i had pics.

damn i really dont know. I know that doing it without pics and without getting paid , is gonna be a pain in the ass. I know that not doing it , ill feel bad , and ill probably regret it , even if i think , that i think , that its the right thing to do.

    arrrgghhh.

but yeah i know its possible to do something without pics , i never said it wasnt , but itd not how i see it.

plus the club supposedely is gona be AWSOME my friend said , so far what is done is really cool , my friend went to see the guy , not me , and they meet there.

You're pretty much committed to doing this. Don't give yourself a bad name by renegging on your buddy. Also, it *could* end up to be a real fun site to work on, and a great opportunity to boot.

It's too late to start making demands.

1st: Find out what the cllub will be like, find out what the clientelle will be, get an idea for your demo.

2nd: Hit up http://www.gettyyone.com and grab some comps. use the comps in your demo, that's what getty has em there for, so you can use them in your designs till you get the real ones.

3rd: Show demo and cross your fingers.

4th: Hit your partner, HARD. NEVER LET HIM DO ANYTHING WITHOUT TALKING TO YOU FIRST!!!

In the future: People that own/manage nightclubs or bars are very sleazy and WILL SCREW YOU OVER without a second thought.

    gotta go :( ... bye

    fuck all that.

Do a demo, but just make it more of a case study - instruct them on what they need.

Just do a powerpoint with 6 slides tha include "your audience, samples of other successful sites that you should follow", and design samples of the style you will use.

Should take about 2 hours and should be enough for the client to decide to use you or not.

You and your partner need to iron out your production method and sales tactics. Whatever you do, agree on the way you work.

  • AD0

A Flash demo for free... with no guarantees regarding it's use or further contract work

    no way

if you do this - you're actually hurting all of us as a collective

not saying back in the day I didn't get chumped when I was starting out but if we are a community then we have to continue to help each other by not doing free work for protifitable clients

  • chilaquil0

    don't do it.

    it's ridiculous.

In my country, it's customary for architects to work that way, and they get completely raped all the time. I got a few architect friends that have designed whole projects for free and not gotten the job they bid.

We don't want our industry to go the same way...

  • Louno0

Yeah im a noob designer so i dont think it would take me only 2 hours to do this demo man .
I dont know , sometimes things just flow and i can do stuff pretty quick , but im still a noob now so i guess i need more experience and all that , so i usualy take 1 day or 2 to make a demo .

Im working home to so there is plenty of distraction . Damn NT.

Also i dont know if its just me ,but if i try to design something , then when its about 80% finished , leave it like that for 1-3 day , then come back to it , ill make it like tons better ? add some new stuff and all.. hehe .

But yeah anyways , me and my partner are really best friends ,we know each other for most of our lives. I went to talk to him tonight and , seems like im gonna have to do it. And worst i dont even have even the logo , execpt on this piece of paper that i have to go scan at some friend house because i dont have a scanner yet.

But yeah i know this sucks , and i hope i can manage somehow to make something pretty or something they will like so i get the contract.

Thanks for your comments everyone :/
This will be the last time i do things like that.

My friend agreed to something with a client and , he just cant call him back and ask for money... so if i dont do it , we screwed . If i do it , we might screw it , or maybe it will end up good . Hopefully.

Seems like those fuckers got you by the wing, eyh??!!

FUCK ´EM and fuck your friend too. It´s one job, one club; they´re probaly gone bankrubt in a year, clubpeople do that you know!

Don´t be a sellout, dude. Being that, kind of stick to you, I know. Do one little job for free and everybody wants free stuff from you. Pro Bono is good but it sometimes is hard to tell others to pay for the same.
    DON´T DO IT!!

  • quamb0

    what mick said:

    it shouldn't take long.

create a slideshow with examples and design-talk to impress (demographic, colour, interactive etc etc).

say, it could be screenshots of other club sites, followed by some paragraphs on what this club NEEDS out of a site. Then some colour scheme ideas, flowchart and basic layout ideas.

    BAM your done.

Once you've set up a demo (or pitch) format for your company, you can reuse it for your next job too.
