Putting together a proposal for a double glazing company. My eyes are now double glazed.
Anyway I want the user to be able to upload an image (i.e browse their hardrive for jpg) of their house. Then my flash movie will import their uploaded image from the server into flash. .....Stay with me people....then I will build a kind of Flash App that allows you to drop and drag and resize different types of windows over the image of your house.
Now I can do the app itself, its just the uploading and importing an image into Flash 'on the fly' that I have problems with, anyone any ideas the best way to do this. I am working with an ASP nerd if this helps my chances.
Hope someone out there has done something vaguely similiar, or has seen examples of this type of functionality online and can give me addresses.
Peace and rice.....and double f*cking glazing.

Im 28 with 2 kids, now who feels old?
- lind0
This thread is making me feel old -- I'm older than you.
I'd ask any Flash questions at a different forum -- http://www.actionscript.org/foru… . Also, there's the Macromedia forum at http://webforums.macromedia.com/…

I've been checking Deja for something similar. I want an email form with an attachment. According to Macromedia, it's not possible to send a file with Flash. So that's the answer to your poblem too I guess. Ask the asp guy to create a form you put in a small popup. Send the file to a database and dynamically load it in Flash 6.
I do think it's much more easy to make a projector and just use an installer to get people to place a picture in the projector folder.
Isn't Director able to do these things btw? I'm not much of a Director nerd :P

Lind
Thanks for those forums, just thought NT might have a few genius Flashers hiding away. Already tried macromedia, but will defo try the actionscript org one.

Hey!! The "antique" feel has nothing to do with age.
"Antique" can be good.
And I´m still older than you, boy!!

Reluct - Yes, director is able to do it, but still requires the use of other platforms such as ASP in combination. I want to do it in Flash because theres not many Grandmas out there looking for windows with Shockwave installed on their Browsers. Is that ageist?
Anyway I was thinking along your lines, A form in ASP that simply uploads your photo to the server and gives it a unique name. ONce its uploaded it then opens a flash movie that somehow dynamically retrieves the name of the image file and then loads it straight into Flash as if it was an SWF. Is it possible to dynamically load a jpg into Flash? whats the procedure?
Thanks

If you are using Flash 6 it is. Just use a load movie and load a .jpeg instead.
Flash 5 will need a .swf version and that requires a server side app.
Good luck. It's not an easy thing to do, but you will be the envy of all of us :P haha.

You need ASP/PHP to upload the file.. I can't remember who this is done on the top of my head, but you could go here http://www.readthefuckingmanual.… or webmonkey http://www.webmonkey.com
Load the place and location of the file into a database or text file, it just makes it easier for flash to get it.
You also need to asign a id number to the flash user when they enter the page, that way there will be no over writting of images, between users. The when they have uploaded the file, get flash to get the image using the id number from the database.
Bingo.

anything for a design nerd
haven't tried it, but here's somethin'

- frankbb0
damn it!..
You want it on the users computer and not on the web.
you need something to help flash serach the users directory system. I haven't seen this done before, but i will keep my eye open.
- reluct0
Hmm it's still uploading... ehehe. Long load for a 2k file.
- reluct0
I don't think that's possible frankbb. Most browsers do not allow you to use the users computer for security reasons. Well except for cookies and caching then.
- Seph0
Frankbb No shouldnt need to search users directory as I will do all this all in ASP before entering the Flash movie. What will happen is (I think I am getting closer thanks to your help too.)
Normal ASP/HTML form that uploads the photo from users directory onto the server and saves it with a unique name.
i.e myhouse_24524.jpg
Once the unique photo has completed uploading then using JS the browser is automatically redirectoed to the flash movie but with the unique ID passed to the address.
i.e
/windowViewer.swf?myhouse_24524
Then Flash movie will read the address from browser and get the unique ID and then load the correct image.
How hard can that be? Anyone see any obvious flaws in my plan?
Please tell me.Thanks.
- reluct0
It should work fine :) A form upload does take a while, so better give them something to do in the meantime.
Use asp to redirect. Just change the embed src to "windowViewer.swf?myhouse
_24524"
- Seph0
Is my procedure going to fail miserably or light the way for future uploads into Flash?
- Seph0
Reluct
embed src? please xplain a bit what you mean.
Thanks for vote of confidence by the way.
- reluct0
It's very easy to pass a variable to a flash movie by altering the embed src of the movie. I've done that many times for banners etc.
<embed src="yourswffile.swf?yourvariabl... etc.
Your movie will load with the variable set. Try it. It's easy :)

I have a feeling that involves the dreaded FScommand, if it does then I cant use it as its not 100% cross platform. Otherwise I will look into it thanks.
