how difficult is it to get into php? i'm planning on re-doing a site and i'd like to be able to add to photo galleries, or add new pieces of artwork with small descriptions, and pull it all from a database.
i'm assuming this is more on the beginner side of php and i shouldnt have much of a problem. am i right?

PHP is really pretty easy, especially if you have some programming experience. The nicest thing is the documentation, which is top-notch; making it pretty easy to do anything.
I've found that it's really similar to actionscript, so if you're pretty familiar with that, then writing PHP should make a lot of sense.
However, if your project is on a deadline, it's never a good idea to try to learn a new skillset for it.

hm, sorry for littering the thread but another newbie question:
I want to have a list of items with 4-5 parameters each and to be able to list/rank them on the page by these parameter values. Like, they're listed by par1 and if I click on par3 they rearrange accordingly.
Can I manage that alone starting with zero knowledge of databases and all? I do know html, though. With some open source, ready-made stuff maybe?

Nice, no I have no deadline, my own project, and I know actionscript well.

rade > ive never done that before but it should be possable.
you would just make the column name a link ie - page.php?sort=age
so, clicking the link would sort the items on the page by age
pretty rough example, but you get the idea

so, just install php, put that on the link and it works by itself?
/thanks kinetic

I'm not real knowledgable about Flash's backend language abilities but I have read that it supports XML so in my mind I can't see why the language you use really matters. You can use any of the current server based scripting languages to control and manipulate XML, just depends on your preferred environment and what kind of syntax you want to work with. Programming is programming, just different markup. Logic will function the same.

rade > hehe, not exactly, you need to setup database connections and querys and all that jazz, then in the query have something like
$query = select * from tablename order by $var
and in your link in the php file
page.php?var=nameso the query would read, select * from tablename order by name
