What do you think about them in general come on. Dish out the dirt, ruin your chances for employment.

The good ones will guide you towards the right direction, But most are so hands on that they make you feel like a computer bitch! It's ok if you learn, but from the bad ones you won't.

Imagine having a multi-millionaire-driving a Rolls-Royce to work- model fucking-ego as big as his wallet-boss as a art director.
That's what I have to deal with.

ouch montreal
i had a few art directors when i first graduated c98. they had super huge egos but were still in the paste-up era. they had no idea how to use a computer (illi, photoshop, quark and the like). the only real cool one took the time to learn and he is still with that company. the other 2 never bothered. they would roll up on us scrub production artists and us things like "how do i use the pen tool" and shit. one day i snapped and said CTFM! and he was like what? and a couple of us shouted "consult the fucking manual"
that was a good day, never worked for a ad since

fuck yeah, .........in my experience an art director is just someone who is too lazy to work on his own ideas...........punk bitches.........and then you have the cool ones that you would actually like to hang out with...but they are rare.

I have a a great one, but she's very traditional. She always asks for print-outs when jpegs or pdfs would do. I feel like I should have her job because my design and especially my technical skills are better. We are designing our company's web site and although they want all these bells and whistles, she's still opposed to an all Flash site because of all this Jacob Nielsonian propogangda. It's very frustrating, knowing what I could deliver for them. I even delivered a document on how I would answer all their bookmark/metatag/shit objections. I think I'll stop now and go to bed before I end up in a hissy-fit -tizzy. Good night.

I'm still pretty much a fresh out of college designer, freelancing and working fulltime.. but I'd like to say I will eventually work my way up to AD, and try to be one of those 'good ones'.... Its all a matter of vision I guess, and how you communicate it to the designers....

There is a solution. Become one :P
My art director ate me alive, because some people found out it was me, not her, who created all the concepts. The only thing she did as say if she thought it looked pretty.
She's doing her own "concept" work now and the results are so bad it's almost funny :)
There you go. Kissed all my chances for employment away.

*Gasp* You spoke out against an AD, now: "you'll learn just what your place is, and trust me, my word is worth much more than yours"
