Hello you fine people!
Just abit of advice really. I find mac os x is running really sluggish on my mac (G4 500 MHz, 64 mb graphics card, 384mb ram) photoshop seems really slow etc compared to 9 - so I want to try and improve it. Is the answer more memory? I thought a faster graphics card might've helped but it didn't. So I was going to buy 512mb of ram or is the machine just too old?thanks for any help.

i dont think there is much you can do. i was using osx on a 700mhz with 768 megs of ram and it performed like shit. if you could disable all the eye candy, shawdows and alphas, i think it would help the interface speed. but you cant, without hacking the os.

i ahve a dual g4 450 and its a little slow.. just load it up with ram, update to 10.2.4, and disable crap you dont need like shadows and etc.........
it'll prolly feel way slower.. but "behind the curtain" there's wayyyy more stuff going on than in 9..

I do have alot of the eye candy nonsense turned off. it's just e.g. zooming into an image in photoshop - it seems to lag, not be responsive and is jerky. not a smooth zoom like 9 would be. damn. so more ram won't help? down to the processor? :-(

yeah I'm on 10.2.4 :-( Shame - I really like using 10.

try "repair permissions"
reboot from your initial MacOSX install CD, go under the apple menu and clikc on utilities, click on your machine hard drive icon, click "repair permissions" it rebuilds the desktop like OS9, do this about every 30-60 days, it will fix just about everything from printing and connections and make you machine boot faster and be zippier... just a thought...

Buy a new video card! and get more ram. Repair permissions (if you've never done it before) will make a huge difference.

thanks everyone for yer help! ok. will try the repair permissions (interesting - never heard of it!) The video card is actually new. And yeah I think I'll just get the extra ram and give it a go.
cheers!

Late to post this but hope this helps...
I have a 400mhz G4 and like you upgraded the video card but no real improvements, just installed more RAM(800+M) and crossed my fingers...no dice.
So now I'm looking at either a processor upgrade, supposedly this does wonders if you have a good video card...hmm.

just upgrade your mac!
its so easy, just toss out your old computer and buy a new one.
j/k. I'm experiencing "snappiness" issues too on my G4 867mhz.
just get use to it. my roomate couldn't deal with it so he went back to os 9

Either you guys are working on 2 gig files or I got a lucky machine- I still use a dual 450 maxed out with 1.5 gigs of ram and EVERYTHING flys in OSX 10.2.4 ... the only faster in OS 9 were the windows opening and closing in my opinion.

same thing here. i upgraded my processor to a gighertz, and she good as new. if you can afford it, i bought a sonnet from OWC for $550. also, have you optimized your HD? use cocktail (previous link) and clean/optimise your drive before you buy the processor.

gawd blimey! loadsa response!! seriously - nice one. thanks for all yer help!! I've downloaded cocktail, but can't run repair permissions etc until I get my os x disk back from work (I'm off this week) but I'll give everything suggested a go!
cool.

Finally got my installer disks. So I've tried to repair my permissions but it's getting about a third of the way across and hanging! The progress bar stops animating and the cursor goes jerky and then hangs! Err... any suggestions?
thanks

go back to OS9
that's what I did.
I'll wait for the PPC970 before I switch to OS X, thanks.

I've been on Macs for 11 years and OS X has me seriously thinking about switching to PCs. I just don't know that much about them. I never thought I would abandon Apple, but all this crap makes me feel they abandoned me.
