I would like to create a demo/promo reel. I have no idea how to do this. I know flash and I know premiere. What else do I need? What order do I do things in? Could someone explain how this process goes or point me to a tutorial?

I don't know either, but you may want to email transfatty and ask him for some info. he's the king/queen of demo reels

don't look at other reels for a start...
use your own ideas.... follow your intuition...

ok,
here is what you do.find a track or portion of a musical
track that you like. something that
has a memorable open, a strong middle,
and a definate close. It should be no more than 2 minutes.
make sure the track is sick,
and if its not, keep looking.consider a track possibly that is
maybe an older song, from a different
era, that will contrast with your work
in a good way.if you have alot of different work,
only pick the best, most unique work.consider including your own personal work
or experiemnts in the edit.Get yourself a good editor, or if you are gonna edit it
yourself, get a few opinions before you make
it public.consider creating a design or series of designs
specifically for the reel ... an open and a close
and possibly an I.D. that appears somewhere in the edit. these should be awesome and clever and memorable.
you are branding yourself and your skills after all.lastly, think of a unique packaging design, if its gonna be on VHS, that it be really tricked out and eye catching.
VHS tapes and cases are made in all different colors
and opacitys and with the right sticker design can look super professional.have fun with it.
don't be afraid to take risks
and do something funny with
sound bites or strange images
that are there for no other reason
except to make people smile.a smile goes a long way.
hope this helped,
Fatty

And that's very helpful info, Transfatty. I will definitely apply those ideas. Still, I'm curious about the procedure from a technical perspective. From which program to which program next, file formats, etc.

thx, great explanation 'Fatty!
(btw.. you won't get copyright issues for music and other stuff?.. you sample a lot of shizz, you never had trouble?? 2ManyDJ's had a lot of legal issues before releasing their CD.... please share... thx! )

regarding demo reels ....
it is unlikely the music industry
will come after a freelance artist
for using music as part of their reel. After all they have bigger problems like soulseek, napter and kazaa to deal with at the mo.
some might disagree with me but on a reel whose shelf life is probably measured in months, you are fine.

btw
everything is cleared on myDVD.

dunno what type of files your work is in originally but maybe director - you can export video to mpeg and import it in, and add images etc etc and export to a stand-alone projector that you can burn onto CD - If its not whopping huge that is.

dude try storyboarding your ideas out first too, kinda helps when it comes time to animate.....
