that article scares me.... because they pulled people from the Windows development to put them in Future computer design????? why dont they hire a few people who know about design like IDEO, pulling people from thier own windows department.. a bunch of coder nerds.. to design the future of PCs... bah.... they need some creative talent

hmmm...
I think you should give a little bit more respect to "coder nerds" and engineers in general. You act like designers would own the word creativity. If you work with some engineers you will find out that they are not a mass of droids, but individuals who have some wicked ideas. They might not express their thoughts quite as vividly as your mates, but the ideas might still be worth investigating further.BTW. Dig your work.

Plus they have an understanding of what is/will be possible and where things are leading... I'd assume a balanced team would be used... Everyone is always ready to knock Microsoft, when they done a lot of good work.

ive worked in an engineering office and a computer programming office... believe me when i say this thing makes me scared.....

Balanced teams are the key to most top notch work. Unfortunately they bring a lot of trouble too. Most of the problems seem to be related to miscommunication. Designers tend to pat themselves on the back, because they see themselves as great communicators. The thing is that you need to be able to communicate in and out. When you have different kinds of people sometimes you need to give a lot more time for the message to sink in. You also need to be able to listen. It requires a lot patience. I totally understand your frustration as I've worked the past three years in house at a research institute full of telecommunications engineers.

Engineers are more likely to think that really out of the box ideas wouldn't work.
I think the computers of te future have nothing to do with what is possible, but with what we can imagine possible.
That's why I don't think MS would be better of hiring "real designers".

their talk of 'computers of the future' is more about the NEAR future- ie tablet pc's, computer based living etc.
microsoft want more money godamnit! and they want it now!

Check out the macromedia site of day (maybe yesterday's). It's the promotional site for microsoft's wrist watch. Although the site itself is abit jaggy it still looks cool. The same can be said about the watch - a bit pointless but still cool. Maybe they do have the point.
BTW, does anybody know what this the market share of apple right now?

definately - I LOVE the way mac's look and if I could afford one I would totally get one...they are beautiful machines...PC's - look at them - ugly white boxes and knobs - no thought for design - although they are getting better - I like the new Dells - and monitors - come on! cream colored and shaped like a box!

As with every hip design Macs get "lame" way too quickly. On the other hand PCs never look cool, but also they never look "man, that's so lame!"

i guess what got me upset was that they said they are pulling people off their windows team.. to do this.. that seams weird..
I didnt say you need designers like us.. i was speaking of people like the IDEO team etc.. where they are think tanks and engineers etc...
I just got weirded out when they said they were pulling people off the windows team.. to me that seems... stupid....

You know the ones monitor and comp in one with round edges... what was its name? Anyway, the fact is that the hotter you are today the quicker you will fade away tomorrow. Just think of all the people driving the new VW Beetle... Man i'm would be so ashamed to be seen in that car even though it was the coolest thing around when it acme out.
