I was doing that for a month, calling places and then sending promos and shit. Hardly anyone showed interest.
I asked a friend who had her own design firm and said that she usually get 4 or more cv per week. Most of the time she doesn't even look at them.
So it's best to try calling them back and bug them. I've heard that most creative directors bookmarks your site and then call you when they have work suitable to your skill sets.
good luck.

I have an Interview on Wednesday. Wish me luck.
Although mine is just for a work placement or "Internship" as they are called in America.

The firms are all cut down to the bare minimum with their staff... just trying to ride out the drab economy and not go under, and certainly not hiring a whole lot [at least in the US]...
They'd rather spend their time generating new business than looking at books, whether they're great books or not, because they don't have any positions to offer.

I don't understand the single-view outlook for work designers seem to have?
Why keep trying to get on at some design agency or firm? I see postings all the time for designers and programmers/developers wanted for places like Hospitals, Publishers, offices, etc...
There is much more out there than the latest swank design firm.
So what if it's not the most 'creative' or trendy design job...welcome to the world of commercial art.
Besides, it's experience and money in your pocket. And, a lot of times since these are specific positions, there is usually plenty of time to work on personal stuff...
I've never understood the desire to work at nothing but firms.

Good luck, Paul.

totally understand that outlook sp, i agree totally, it's a wierd old fish london at the mo, and i'm having the problem that i've got soo much all round skill (idtv, web, packaging, print) it seems they ca't pigeon hole me into a certain design category.
i have noticed an upswing in design in london, but mainly in print n packaging. a lot of the companies are moving out towards the m4.. (west).
i'm hopefully getting an interview (apparently) for one 30 miles outside of london, which means a fucking big spend on petrol a week man!

Yeah agencies are over rated. BUt make sure you find a place that will give you creative freedom and share some kind of vision with you. You don't want to end up doing crappy flyers and promos that are bitch ugly.
