I don't understand the single-view outlook for work designers seem to have?
Why keep trying to get on at some design agency or firm? I see postings all the time for designers and programmers/developers wanted for places like Hospitals, Publishers, offices, etc...
There is much more out there than the latest swank design firm.
So what if it's not the most 'creative' or trendy design job...welcome to the world of commercial art.
Besides, it's experience and money in your pocket. And, a lot of times since these are specific positions, there is usually plenty of time to work on personal stuff...
I've never understood the desire to work at nothing but firms.
