Well, I do, but more so on a logo gig than a website... most of us were trained to flush the ideas out thoroughly on paper before building on the machine, but I fear it's a dying art...
What do you think?

depends what the job is... But generally I go straight to the computer. It wasn't the way I was taught, but I can work so much quicker.....and when you have a shit load to do speed is a priority..

I used to sketch feverishly, but anymore I just go straight to the computer. Occasionally I'll flesh out some logo ideas on a pad, but as was mentioned earlier; I just work faster on a machine. That, and I have the freedom to do a lot more, a lot faster. Plus, occasionally I'll run into one of those 'happy accidents' that gives me a result I didn't intend, but like none the less.

yeah, time forces us to skip that stage in the development process...
does it hurt the final product?

i sketch the larger jobs out on paper, something quick and easy that has to be done in a few hours or a day ill do straight on the machine.

I was taught to go on paper first and do believe that its sometimes better that way. Lets say your making a spread layout, sketching thumbnails on paper is a great idea, but for the comprehensive sketches, I find that its better to do them on the computer.

I don't hurt trees.

the only time i sketch out a project nowadays is if the project requires some serious creative thinking.
most of the shit i have to churn out is mindless, so i never do thumbnails.
i get a sketchable project maybe once a month. and i love it when i do!

Same response as bio really. I'll sketch something if it'll benefit the eventual outcome of the project. I'll always presketch an illustration though.

anybody get requests by clients to show sketches— like for a logo project? I think I'd only sketch more if it was required for the project or a presentation...

I sketch everything. I've found it actually saves me a lot of time in the long run....

When clients ask for "roughs" I give them my initial illustrator builds. Never sketches.

I always sketch, but very very losely. All my sketches look like 3rd grade doodles; however, they really help to put down the idea. I can tell if something will work or not before I even start to dick around with the computer.

my business partner's quote:
"Sketching is a waste of creative energy."
I tell her she's crazy... she's probably just trying to get a rise out of me. Oddly enough, when she paints, she does all sorts of figure studies and prep sketches— just not for her design work.

I'm a child of the 70's ovalle, but just barely... there's definitely a trend with those of us who entered the field post-computer... sort of what I assumed
problem is, although the machine is a great tool, it's limiting in so many ways.
sketching is pure—

blastofv, yeah that is what i was getting at. i mean i was born in the late 70's, but i practically grew up with a penicil in my hand doodling and sketching. I studied architecture in my undergrad, so the ability to draw and sketch is very important to me and to the discipline, even to this day. but sadly more and more students that enter architecture have opted for the computer when designing claiming its faster to design and produce these trendy 3d images. which is true but about 95 percent of those designs lack any concept or ideas. they have no idea of proportion, scale, etc. Sketching allows you to really understand how to develop a sense of process. But i guess this type of sketching is different then the sketching you would do maybe for logos or web design.. in any event freehand sketching will always win me over,
