I know this isn't design related, but i know someone here has to know something about computers and how they work.
I am cleaning my computer (pc) and in my c drive I have found a folder that contains 5300 _CU files. What are these? It is in a folder by the name of 1383 or something like that.
The files are 1k but I would like to clean them out. What are they there for and what do they do?
Thanks in advance and sorry if this post wasted your time.

Um. Have you tried opening one of the files in a text editor just to see what it says?
They are not Windows files that I know, if that is what you're worried about. I doubt you will hose your system over deleting them...but they might be connected with a piece of software you use?
Dunno, exactly without seeing the file.
Could be temp files from a Windows update or something...What OS do you have?

They might be temp files and are not needed.
Go to your System Tools area in the start menu and then click "Disk CleanUp" This will remove your temp files without harm.

i think they are temp files...
also you are doing some like of operation that may not be safe or running a software that is creating them files..
i used to get that alot....
it doesnt waste hd space that much so i let it be...
but i believe it doesnt do any harm..

I wouldn't go around deleting files off your harddrive if you don't know what they are..especially if they aren't taking up much space. - can you say reformat?

Something that you can do if you have applications that generate a lot of temp files - say like Ultraedit that saves a temp file for every file you edit/open/make...(this is configurable in the settings in most apps btw) is create and use a ROM disk to store temp files.
That way, if the temp files are not important it deletes them when you reboot/turn off your machine.
Do this ONLY if you have a lot of RAM in your box. At least 512.
But, for useless temp files it's the way to go.
I read an article about it in 2600 Hacker Quarterly...it's a good trick to store data that you don't want laying around on your drive - if you catch my drift.
I do it for my browser cache...and cookies, that way I don't have to manually clean them all the time.

Oh, and those files are not needed on XP. So, deleting them won't affect your system - I can't say the same for any programs that you have, though.
