how did you register a site back in 92? My only guess would be that the company they registerd their domain name would have had one registered first.

Network Soulutions was the first company to have complete control over domain name registrations. The company is now Verisign they were given the government contract in the mid 90's.

Some Government sites & Universities must have the oldest registered sites, because before names were made available certain ones were put aside for govt & educational facilities that already existed and maintained user networks.

"In May, 1974, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) published a paper titled "A Protocol for Packet Network Interconnection." The paper's authors -- Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn -- described a protocol called "TCP" that incorporated both connection-oriented and datagram services.
It soon became apparent to the two men that this design should be subdivided into two separate protocols. Session management was not easy to do in an application-independent way. In practice, an application could sometimes run more efficiently or be implemented more easily when it managed network connections itself. "TCP" became Internet Protocol (IP) that supported datagrams and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP/IP) that added connection semantics as a layer on top of IP. "

Apple
Record created on 19-Feb-1987.

The 19th of March seems to be the earliest registers. I know that .com was made available at the end of 1985.

October 1984 –
Paul Mockapetris (then at USC's Information Sciences Institute) designed the architecture of the new Domain Name System.
RFC 920 establishes 7 generic “top level domains” (gTLDs, including .com, .net, .org and .gov) to provide domain space for corporations, non-profits, schools, networks, US government offices and the US military.
-------------------------------
Looking for a domain name registered in 1984 or 85. That is the earliest date I would think that one could be registered.
