trying to get one for a friend, the budget is US$250-$300
any good suggestions besides ipod?

I wanted an Ipod, but I just couldn't justify spending $400 bucks for a glorified walkman. So I bought a Philips Expanium MP3 Disk player. It's a CD player that plays regular CD's and CD's containing MP3. So you can burn about 10 regular CD's into one CD full of MP3's and only have to carry one CD. Need the content of 20 CD's? Well, then carry 2 CD's full of MP3.
It only costs about $100 bucks. Sure, it may not hold 4 Gigs of songs,in one CD, but if you carry 5 CD's with you it's almost equivalent. And if you go on a trip or something, don't tell me you can't take 5 CD's...
AND... I'll let you in on a little secret. For about $50 bucks I bought some very nice computer speakers with a crazy subwoofer (It's a logitec, but I don't remember the model) and it hooks up to the MP3 player quite nicely. That's what I use at work and it's so fucking loud it's not even funny. Louder than you'll ever need it to be.

Why reject the iPod? The 5 gig is in your price range and it will hold a fuckload more than 10Cds worth. It will also let you transfer gigantic files. It will also fit in your pocket, unlike any CD walkman.

I have the 5gb, it's nice and the price is right, but it's out of stock in nyc, I also cheak many online stores and they are out too.
I even try ebay, and the final bid is always over $350.
