AH! I replied without reading... I think soudn on a banner is awful and annoying. You're more likely to alienate consumers than attract them in my opinion.

sound on banner, no way.
though sound/music on a site can be great if done well.
90% of the time its awful due to designers thinking they are musicians (insert bad techno/idm loop here).

Thanks for the replies.
I am always the first one to shoot down ideas that my boss comes up with, and I think they think that I try to shoot everything down just because I don't like it.
They have no reference to anything but "Well, our customers like it when their website makes sound"
I asked them "Uhm, well do they like it when any OTHER websites have sound? I doubt it. Because then they can't wow them selves by thinking "wow, I have sound on my website which makes the ridiculous-seeming price seem worth it to me"
Our clients are generall luddite idiots . . .
but that's beside the point.
My bosses were pretty vehemently arguing that users like sound.
Although neither of them have any data to back it up.I didn't realy have any data to back it up either - but I just know myself, and having read tons of complaints over the years that people HATE sound in general.
and NT got a lot of flack for that jingle.
Complaints everyweek for a long time until people gave up complaining because they never did anything about it.
