I was arguing with my boss about sound.
This would be basically a loud annoying flashing flash banner.I said that a vast majority users hated sound it because it was annoying - especially when it's not part of the site - it's just a banner.
They claimed that because clients loved it on their own sites that other people would love it too.
I don't agree.
is there any information or data about this on the web?

i generally do NOT like sound on websites. however, some people can pull it off. it all depends on how you approach it. just don't over do it and keep it soothing. no one wants to enter a site and be blasted out by their speakers.

Sound on a banner?? What a waste of bandwidth...

that sounds like a 'boss' thing to say.
what a moron. sorry if he/she is your friend or relative :)you should use the sound 'hey! over here. click this banner to find out great stuff on...'
I hate that one

over at www.aintitcool.com
harry knowles, (who operates that site) had a super annoying banner ad that made a sound of smashing glass or something...
anyhow, he had hundreds of complaints to have it turned off...
so if your looking for complaints
there ya go..
people don't like it...and in that case they spoke the hell up and complained...
alot.
think the sound effect is gone now...

how about this sound:

me don't either, especially while i'm blasting my mp3 off iTunes with my headphones......
another issue was increasing the file size, i don't want to load a 700k flash intro with nothing but some canned abstract techno......

that's actually kind of funny. then again i read his site as anticool.com so there it would make sense. that gives me an idea...

banners should never have sound, it would overshadow the page it was placed on.

i dont like sound either... there are very few sites that incorporate bg sound loops well enough for me to want to turn off mp3's and listen, so it just ends up being a nuisance.
if youre trying to get people to buy something from the banner, then its best not to annoy them... on the other hand if yure just trying to get them to click on the banner, annoying can work.

Banners are bad enough without being flash, let alone having sound.
I absolutely hate sites with sound because 90% of the time I'm at my computer I have my own music playing, thankyouverymuch.
If you absolutely have to have sound, leave it to roll-overs or something the user has to trigger with their mouse. Or include a turn-sound-off button.

sound on a site SUCKS!!
unless its an intro.
dont you hate those times when your blasting your mp3's while your workign, then decide to surf around a bit, then run into a site with some F%$# up jams, which is usually louder than what you set you mp3 player to.
those sites are an automatic (dont go back to) in my book.
now there are a couple sites who pulled it off well, like 2advanced, but not toomuch more..
my 2 centz.

this a good example of something we need.
good reference material to back up our views on stupid ideas like this.

"Those designers that play a sound file without choice immediately a page is displayed lose traffic from every worker in an office situation with an advanced workstation with speakers. If my computer starts playing music, those around me are likely to assume that I am just playing games. At the very least, it lowers the credibility of the information, and in the increasingly common cubicle "farms" is disruptive to those around me. I immediately back out of such a site, and then consider if it seemed so valuable that I should adjust my sound level and re-enter, or just go somewhere else. The situation is quite different when a click is required to fire a sound file off, and I can make a choice.
"Do a search for "sound" in useit.com, it should give you more than enough reference material.
Funny that you are posting to Newstoday about this, since they play that damn jingle every time you visit.

I like sound on web site when its well done and meaningfull.
but please not on a banner!
- unknown0
Nope. Usually it's some annoying techo loop that makes you want to stab your own ear drums out, very rarely done well.
:P

"that damn jingle" makes neeko happy.

I work with sound design, and u got to be carefull when u put audio on website. I just saw 1 (just 1) cool banner with sound, but was long time a go.
Man, if isn't a DAMN COOL BANNER and the sound is the Big Thing, forget it. Just use grafix.

I hate music on a site, but sounds are okay.
