OK. Maybe this is a no-brainer in this economy but I'm struggling with a decision. What should I do?
I'm offered a job at an ad agency/design shop. It's small, their website sucks. Their work is ok...but the owner seems to love my work and says I'd have lots of creative freedom. Right now it would be 50/50 print/web but owner also seems very open to allowing me to develop web work cause wants to offer that more. Pay would be very good. I'd be supervising jr. staff. The only thing that sticks in my throat is that I'm not so keen on their aesthetic. Kinda ugly office. Small company so its not like I can get away from them. Its not rock-n-roll sexy. But then there is a steady, very good paycheck and this implied freedom and an end to schlepping for freelance work.
Am I crazy for even questioning?

Their offices being ugly is on your list of criteria in selecting an employer? wow.

normally i would say hold out for something you feel better about, but in this economy i would recommend that you take it. you can keep looking for more employment while you work the new job. good pay is hard to come by these days. congrats!

Sounds like something you don't know what it's going to be like until you work there.
True creative freedom would be ideal, but what I call creative freedom and what my boss would call creative freedom are probably two different things.
congrats on finding a job tho.

you crazy girl!
get in there and stir things up. maybe the office is dull because they dont know any better.

thanks guys! I know I'm probably being nuts but I'm just trying so hard not to move backward in my career.
AND...its not just cause their office is ugly...I worked at a place for awhile who really tried to bend me to their own ugly-ass sensibilities and I hated it so not keen on repeating that.
thanks!! you guys rock. guess I just need a little moral support. :)

...monkey,
I was in similar situation and I went for it. Best learning experience I ever had. I ended up leaving because I knew it was not what I wanted.
Small business can be great, but often they expect the world from you and though the pay seems nice, it doesn't make up for the 24 7 that your dedicating to the job. Maybe that wouldn't be a problem, because you get the chance to build a sweet portfolio, right? But your portfolio looks like someone elses terds because the boss has final say, and his tastes are "different". Besides the fact that you don't have the time to come up with any kick-ass work, because the 27 projects your working on are due in 5 minutes. So you decide to redo your portfolio on your free time, but you don't have any free time.
If money is all you want, then you'll be set up. If progress is what you want, then think about it.
haha... maybe I'm just bitter, and maybe this doesn't apply to your prospective company.
Ask yourself:
Is design your career, or your discipline?

You can always quit, but you won't find new job offers that easy.
Go for it.

monkeyshines: take the offer, try to get more money if you can too, if that doesn't work then negociate an extra week of vacation, counter negociate by saying that with extra money/vacation you promise not to take on freelance projects while working there... you will be working you butt off cause it's a small shop and if you have the expertise in web, you will be leading all the projects too... the economy is not bueno right now and won't get together anytime soon, and lot's of freelancers are dying for FT work...
my 2 cents...
