I have come across some pretty negative designers in my time. Negative about work in general. One thing I have never understood is how a person can be unhappy doing what it is they choose to do as a career and not just a simple job.
At one point, I was pretty negative. but I think it was because of my enviornment. Even then, I loved what I was doing.
Have you dealt with the same issues? Why are a lot of designers so negative. It reflects in their work and their attitude. I have noticed a lot of designers here are very negative.
Are you? If so, why? REACT!!!

i once read something by a famous philosopher. i cant remember which, but the quote went something like this:
the state of human misery is a constant.
in context, he meant that no matter the station or living conditions, human misery is always the same. a starving child feels the same misery that a wealthy man does.
i know that this sounds odd, but i think it is close to the truth. humans generally base their lives on the misery they feel instead of the joy. it is basic human nature.this also falls in the catagorie of "the grass is always greener"

sorry....
uh, I think there's a certain fantasy to any art/design kind of field. When you choose it as a career, you don't really know what you're in for. It's usually not what you imagined. If I could be left alone, and paid for whatever I wanted to make I would be happy, until then, my job is a drag....
I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean....

oh... i love design. i love working in the field and can see no better suited job for me!

I know a lot of designers that are "all talk" and their design skills are average at best. I find these people are generally the first to criticize and put down other designers work - in aid to make their work seem better. The same type of designer that you think are hot stuff, and then see their work and you think "man, you suck".
These "all talk" designers usually become art directors that everyone hates haha

"I know a lot of designers that are "all talk" and their design skills are average at best"
to expound a little more on this, these ppl are also the ones who are usually left out of the social elitest cliques that form as a result of popularity... design portals such as NT, k10k, linkdup, etc are the indirect cause of this, through no fault of thier own.
so when this sub-par designer isn't accepted into the group, a bit of resentment comes through as they'll tend to look at those elitests and wonder for the love of God, what makes them so special and why they are getting all the clients.
of course, this is just my opinion... no facts to base this off of.

"Shut up and get back to work!"

I feel sooo negative about the place I work but really ultra happy positive nice about my work. I wouldn't want to do anything else nor could I imagine it. And I can imagine some pretty wierd stuff. One time I had a dream about a talking beachball. That was pretty cool. But I digress.
Guess the magic solution is to... find another job!
Oh, wait....

sometimes I wonder if there's something in the nature of the constant barrage of deadlines that when paired with an internal pressure to excell encourages a sort of sub-clinical post-traumatic stress disorder, fostering negativity in someone susceptible to that.

why so negative about negativity?
tell it like it is. if something's bad, say it! if something's good say it!
constructive negativity is a good thing. you can't change for the better if you don't know what's wrong.
the thought behind this thread is an example of bad negativity. just outright dissing negativity is destructive!

Did you also notice that the problem doesn't involve copywriters? I never met a negative/fucked up copywriter. It's always the art director/designer type who's a pain in the ass.
I think it's because, as a designer you'll never know if what you do is any good. It's much to subjective and of course, taste dependent. I, for example, always think all my work is shite. I tend to delete it just before or as soon as it's finished. It's only for commercial purpose that I don't.
For most people it's much easier to judge if a text is well written or easy to read.
That's why copyrighters are cool and designers suck! ehehehe
