i once read something by a famous philosopher. i cant remember which, but the quote went something like this:

the state of human misery is a constant.

in context, he meant that no matter the station or living conditions, human misery is always the same. a starving child feels the same misery that a wealthy man does.
i know that this sounds odd, but i think it is close to the truth. humans generally base their lives on the misery they feel instead of the joy. it is basic human nature.

this also falls in the catagorie of "the grass is always greener"
    =)
