After having a good run for the last six months or so, my supply of freelance web work is starting to dry up a little. Has anyone got any tips on how to get the ball rolling again? It's difficult trying to balance doing your current work with getting out there trying to land new stuff.

I'm just starting to do freelance and would like some tips too!

Thanks in advance. I've been spending most of the day and night looking at agencies and sending out promos. So far I've only been asked for quotes but nothing solid yet.

i'm finding it a constant battle between concentrating on the work I've got on now, and trying to ensure that there's something in the pipeline for next month. I guess the answer is to build up a good relationship with a few agencies and try and pick up clients who are likely to have ongoing work.

do you have a rep that finds you work?

mrming, how long have you been doing freelance? I've just started this year, and have been contact by a few people who might be interested. But still waiting for new work.

I think in most freelance cases, you need to build a strong relationship with the agency. My last job, we hired the same designer to do most of the layouts. She's been doing stuff for that company for over 4 years.

I think all you need to do is one really amazing project for your client and they'll keep coming back to you with new work.

Look for a company/agency/client that needs your services... i.e. a co that does graphic design but maybe not web/multimedia design, trying to build partnership for you and the co.

Also a lot of companies are willing to outsource work instead of going to large agencies... so maybe try and find a couple of days work a week at a company that would usually go to an agency for webdesign. They benefit loads and you get a regular salary that doesn't tie you up every bloody day of the week!

I've gotten most of my clients through word of mouth and an outsourcing agency. I use ArtSource over here in Seattle. I'm still a beginner in the industry but it seems that if you go out on as many limbs as possible, one of them will pull through and get you repeat business or new business.

IE I went to work at a company doing a one-day javascript job and I didn't know javascript well at all. But they saw my flash talent and have been working there for a month doing flash production.
