Isn't 5% just a result of inflation - so it isn't really a raise?

My raise after a year was 5%, made a big difference. The problem is its a little difficult to ask for up to 10% when you're trying not to rock the boat amid a bad economy, layoffs going off around you. I said Thanks! Shook hands, and promptly left. The ones at my company who make more look like big fat cost cutting targets. You bet I'll ask for ten next time. The squeaky wheel gets oil.

If you're in the UK, 5% is a little better than inflation. The percentage you can expect really depends on how much you earn already.
If you're right at the top end of what a senior designer could reasonably expect to earn, you're not going to get 5% unless the company you work for can't do without you (or find a suitable replacement) but if you're a middleweight designer who's done everything asked of him and your work is good then 5% would be fairly reasonable.
Ultimately if it's not enough have a look round for another job. If you can find something in your league that is paying way more than you're getting then you would be entitled to ask for a bigger raise or you'll know you could go elsewhere.

Last raise was 6%. One year ago when things started heading south for the economy.
Changed jobs since then, we'll see what happens at raise time this time around.
