what are some of your views on what to keep the dpi at for web photography?

I may be wrong here, since I always make sure my pictures are 72 dpi when I puvlish to the web, but I don'
t think it matters what dpi you're using, since one pixel is one pixel, regardless of dpi. And computer screens don't show pictures based on what dpi they are, but how big they are in pixels.

if what ribit said doesnt make sense to you, then just stick with 72 for the sake of simplicity. he is right though.

some displays are up to 300dpi... a new Palm screen is about 160dpi , etc...
but dpi is irrelevant on the web... it's just pixels... so if you ever need to involve dpi (scanning?), choose a dpi that gives you the image size in pixels that you need for quality/size...

Basically, what this thread says is that you should forget about dpi settings when producing pictures for the web, the only thing that matters is the pixel size.

Yeah pixel size is all that matters. unless you want people to print your pics out.
(and i thought the title of this thread was the dimensions of your girlfriend...badabum) :P

it still doesnt matter... dpi is entirely up to the person whos doing the printing... (they choose how big to print it)
all the guy putting the images online has to worry about is absolute size in pixels...

You cannot display images on a screen higher than the 'ppi' that a use has set on their monitor.
images on your computer are always 72ppi
there is no dpi because there are no dots.
If you really want, I will explain this in ridiculous depth - but it would probably only confuse you.

the argument that everything is 72ppi/dpi on the web is sort of wrong/irrelevant, depending on what you are really trying to do... there simply arent any inches on the web...just pixels...
You can show a '300dpi' image on the web.... scan a 8"x4" image at 300dpi.... it will simply be a 1200x1500pixel image.
On your average 96ppi LCD screen that's about12 inches wide...but who's measuring the size of images on a screen? All that really matters is what will fit on a screen of a given resolution, and whether the image has enough pixels in it for quality, not it's physical size...
