the argument that everything is 72ppi/dpi on the web is sort of wrong/irrelevant, depending on what you are really trying to do... there simply arent any inches on the web...just pixels...
You can show a '300dpi' image on the web.... scan a 8"x4" image at 300dpi.... it will simply be a 1200x1500pixel image.
On your average 96ppi LCD screen that's about12 inches wide...but who's measuring the size of images on a screen? All that really matters is what will fit on a screen of a given resolution, and whether the image has enough pixels in it for quality, not it's physical size...
