You've got to remember that we are not the common user... it's your job nad possibly a hobby too... Everyday users don't make it their habit to make sure they have the latest browser.

So, make it their habit. Redirect them to a text only site, or to a page that says "Sorry, you're using an outdated web browser FREE upgrades are available here..."
Give them the information they need to understand that the Web changes...and if they don't learn to adapt then they won't get what they're looking for.
It's harsh, and sure, there will be complaints - but, then again people bitched endlessly about television when it was new, and when color televisiion was new...and so on.
Times change, technology changes and users won't unless they are forced to.
It's that simple.
Deal with the ones who accept it and leave the ones that don't to whither.
So sayeth thy standards.
:)
I think my cynicism is directly related to work and home. While at work, I'm much pissier than at home. Hehe.

Lol...work to pissiness ratio is up today. It's universal.
A little pushing is necessary, or we'll be coding for outdated browsers forever.

Very good example, mvb!
Here's another:

(notice they used a css-hub to link to different stylesheets (one with larger fontsize), and print/screen css etc.)

I agree with Engage on this. It's not our peers or even our clients who we are presenting the work too. It's people at home and work. They are not interested weather it's made of CSS, tables, or cardboard and glue. All they care about is 'does it work?' and 'does the design tell me what I want to know.'
By all means find new and interesting ways of making things. But a table's no good if your tea falls off it.

Tables also tend to help with your SWISS layouts too : ) As they make you think about layout like 'what they did in the ol' days...
- kpl0
tables are good for swiss design? please explain.
not that i'm angry about it, since the swiss connection just makes the evilness of tables more apparent.

Basically a grid structure, that easily works across your page.

Yum! good book... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obiā¦

yeah, thought that's what you meant... (really)
grids are possible with css too...and actually it's easier to make a more rigid grid (fixed dimensions) with css than with tables. the code is more complex, I'll conceed.

At the end of the day they're both cool tools for doing it.
