The monsters from "Where the Wild Things are" have been floating around in my head for most of my life.
I was also mush influenced by Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense.
Great illustrations of nonsense.

that's one of my all time favs as a child. also, at a little bit older of a reading age, i loved charlie and the chocolate factory and the BFG (big friendly giant) by roald dahl
