i am lookiing at the gateway 400 series laptops. was wondering if anyone had any experience with gateway laptops to share. good or bad.

my first laptop in college was a gateway solo 2500 - p1 200mmx with 128 ram in it...
that machine now sits under my desk acting as a small dns/firewall box.
it still works dandy.
but, i absolutely hate large, bulky, heavy laptops.
never again will i own anything that isn't under an inch in thickness.
right now, i have an ibm thinkpad 600x which comes in at about an inch and some change.
it's small, light and well suited for coding.
while in college, since i studied architectural design, i needed to do studio max and autocad on my laptop. it worked well enough for a laptop...but i don't recommend design on a notebook all the time.

yeah, this is just for travelling and coffee shops. the gateways are the best designed pc laptops that i see, just over 1.5 thick and pretty sleek looking.
i was also looking at the compaq / hp's.
- sp0
i don't trust hp or compaq architecture or hardware grade.
but that's just me.
my top choices are:
ibm
sharp
dell
sony
gatewayin that order.
you can get ibm 600x's for under 700 bucks.
p3 500, 256ram.
the only thing that suffers on ibm's is graphic cards.
:)

ive had bad luck with sonys, i have a vaio that i am replacing now. i havent looked at the ibm site yet. gonna look now.
dell... i dont know, they are nice laptops, but are clunky looking. sharp's are pretty expensive arent they?

get a dell if you want a serious laptop... but you will sacrafice in weight and dimensions... that's their sore spot.
if sony and dell got together you'd have a really sweet machine.

he he, i was wondering when someone would tell me to buy a mac.

mines a Dell, pc equivalent, dvd and cd burner. 1 year old, weighs a ton, but brilliant.
No regrets about purchasing this.
Lets face it, carrying it it's still lightweight and does'nt matter really. It's performance is superb..........ppl are still amazed when i sit down and look at "Bladerunner Movie" or connect my wacom and do live art sketches.
with double batteries, one goes in floppy drive, i got 5 hours of life........im still amazed !!!!

are you guys in consumerism darkness?
Fujitsu and Toshiba clearly make the better laptops. For design/CAD, I'd recommend anything that can do UXGA resolution (1600x1200). Toshiba's Satellite 6100 is a sweet machine that can kick out UXGA without the blurry pixels, and it also has a firewire port (for video editing).
A yummy machine!

my Dell has 1600 x1200 UXGA screen and firewire port.
I still stand by this

It's what Im buying. (the black one) If you buy, buy directly from Clevo. That's where alienware buys it and put their sticker on. You'll save yourself a nice 1000$ USD This mofo is a beast. I cant find those specs anywhere else. For half the price of a powerbook, you 4x the power.

Cool Montreal
No probs with this spec.
It does not mention firewire however, but perhaps its there anyway. But if you dont want to load from a dv cam, you dont need a firewire port
- unknown0
Yes there is a firewire port and FOUR USB 2.0 ports. Not to mention dual monitor capabilities.
Unbeattable.

Celsius Mobile H all the way baby

Montreal, be aware of the pentium 4
without the M (stands for mobile)
Check the stanby time of it, just in case.

yeah, that alienware is just a desktop inside a laptop casing. it gets like 45 minutes of battery life.

I've been using a Compaq Presario 1700 for the last year and it's really nice. It's small and never given me any problems. But I think they were discontinued last year.
With that said, I'm actually planning to buy a Compaq Presario 1525 next week.
Here's the link to it:

and weighs enough that you think you're carying your desktop.
- unknown0
Actually it only weights about 7 pounds without the battery. It is bulky but I think it looks pimping (black one). I choose that model cause I am power-hungry. Not really cause I want to work in the park, under a tree. Battery life, not a priority.

ok so go for it, it looks really kool that's for sure. Tell us about.
