yeah, i think everyone has had something like this happen to them... my advice is to backup regularly. make other uses of the high speed cd-rw... you'll thank yourself later!

i haven't had any problems with multiple hard drives. if you're installing the OS onto the OTHER hard drive (the one WITHOUT all your resources, files, MP3s), there's no way XP is going to format a drive you don't tell it to.
by the way - as long as your motherboard isn't ancient, you can boot from the XP CD and do a clean install without first having to install Win98. even if you can't set a CD-ROM as a boot device, you can use a boot disk from a floppy to give you CD-ROM support, and run the XP setup then.
also, I've had problems with Maxtor. crappy drives.
it was most likely the virus that f**ked your other hard drive, wouldn't you think? you said you had a virus.

windows 2000 installer:"Setup has detected a copy of windows 2000 already on this drive, warning your my documents and desktop folders will be erased" err thanks microsoft was it too hard to copy them to backups for me beforehand so i didnt have to boot up on a floppy and do it myself, all becuase your fucking msn messenger update made it bluescreen when the bar reached the end on startup also trying to hide the bluescreen by making yourself restart when you hit one by default. Anyway on a mac now so hurrah, my dads got that mess now and it suddenly decided it hasnt got an os on it yesterday and he didnt do anything ahhh windows when will your japes end.

Iomega 80GB USB2.0 external HDD: $150 sealed and new on ebay.
That's the way I do it.
All applications, fonts, resources, client work, code, scripts, site mirrors... everything is on that drive. Back up the mission critical shit to DVD once every 6 months and breathe a sigh of relief.
I've lost three hard drives in my time. One of them meant nothing, the other two meant everything. It'll never fuck me over again.
Also, having an external USB HDD is sweet, because you can plug it into anything and USB 2.0 is faster than firewire.

so anyway, about a year ago. i was doing this crazyass tv piece and one night my hd gets fried. it's sunday night. monday morning i go to a friend of friend who can do miracles with hds and chew on my nails for 24 hours. nothing. one day left before my sound studio time starts running (besides the huge amount of money the only available slot for months). so i work straight for two days. motion capture, effects, render, re-apply effects, render, etc, etc. then i get to the studio, give the man some notes about cleaning the audio... and sleep for ten hours. and then two days of hardcore sound editing. this time i am not the only who's up for two days straight. me and the sound-man looking red eyed at the computer screen and pushing this wav a couple of milliseconds here or there. and we did it to.
funny thing was that at the time i didn't think of all the stuff i had lost. i only thought about how the company will f*ck me out of my money, sue me and roast me. that was a crazy week.
now, it seems kinda funny...
