by the way, my Safari crashed last week and won't run. Has anyone else ran into this problem. I'd like to fix it.

Get back those OS 9 faves like Windowshade, File Labels, and no drop shadows.
I love X's stability, but I've had to hack the shit out of it to make it anywhere near usable. Those ass-clowns at Apple made some really dumb decisions regarding the GUI of OS X. It's like a middle finder to Apple's old Human Interface Guidlines, which revolutionized how we interacted with computers. Now there's a lot of eye candy at the expense of efficiency.
I'm all for Apple trying to increase market share by appealing to a broader audience, but shit, even Windows XP has an option to turn off the Candy-Coated interface stuff. I hate to say it but XP one-ups OS X on several levels (the most important one being the font rendering).
If Jef Raskin were dead he would be rolling over in his grave. But he's not, so he wont...

open your terminal ....
paste this line in it:
--------------------------defaults write com.apple.finder AnimateWindowZoom -bool false
---------------------------
log out and log back in. Now your windows will open without the zoom effect looking faster and zippier. to change it back turn "false" into "true" and log out and in again.

mvb - I'm using windowshade X. Is there a way to save diff shadow effects for different apps? I know you can change the window effects/transparency for diff things. I don't mind the shadows in the finder but I find it abit much on the palettes in photoshop etc. Possible? Have I missed something?

thats a good question...i'm not sure lol.
i have ShadowKiller installed too, no drop shadows anywhere at anytime. in fact, if i could get the drop down menu transparency to turn off all the way i would be even happier.
