My suggestion would be to live in Echo Park. Awesome neighborhood, very strong community. Cheap living, cheap eats, located near freeways and downtown.
Additionally, you are near two major parks(I can walk to both)...Elysian Park is my favorite, feels like you are 100 miles away from the city after a 10 minute walk.
Can't recommend it enough.
