i'd love a place in santa monica, but to live the way i want i have to have a roommate to split the costs!
a nice 1BR is $1400, but for a nice 2BR it's only $2000.
problem is finding a roommate - i don't know anyone out there!

peter you can bet your ass i'll be at the beach every damn weekend!

If you can afford it and can handle the hassle... rent a hotel for a few weeks and when you arrive take your time looking around. There's nothing worse than getting stuck in a 12 month lease in a place, finding out your job is 1 hour drive away, and finding out that your neighborhood sucks the big one.
$1000 in hotel costs is less hassle than being stuck in a 12months lease that costs you $3000 to break.

I am considering a job offer at the moment in SantaMonica and would be looking for a roommate.

How do you people pay for your rent. $1400-$1800 a month for rent is crazy! LA is overpriced and nothing special. I mean I was looking at some job offers in LA, wtf?! The pay is a eatsy bitsy bigger then here in AZ which by no means justifies triple the price of an ordinary apt. I mean for $1400-$1500 you can rent a f*cking dream house in Scottsdale with neighborhood you can only dream off. Please explain to me what's the deal, cause I'm not gettin' it. Cause movie stars and other rich bastards are not renting apts for sure.

I paid $1000 for a decent one bedroom at Pico and Barrington. Not the greatest location, but not bad either.
Westsiderentals is tough. Everytime I signed up for it (was in LA for 5 years during grad school and moved 5 times), I would show up and there would be 30 other people looking at the apart. Ridiculous. I ended up finding all my aparts by driving around for days.
Look in the area south of Pico and Barrington. Nice places, nice neighborhoods, and easy highway access. Also, there are many apartments that do not list in wsr.
Good luck, but make sure you like LA. I thought it sucked, unless you could afford a luxury pad for a few grand a month (but then again, I'd be happy anywhere if I could afford that!). I don't know anyone that really 'likes' LA.

Hollywood is all hype - if you've never been, your expectations will will be shattered. It's a dirty hold with more bums than any place I've ever been. Drive through million dollar mansions and around the corner is 10 run down houses with homeless people sleeping on the streets.

Boz, it's all about following your dreams and making a career move to a place where it's all at.
It's is overpriced, but it's all relative to how you live your life and how much fun there is to be had.

I found a few nice places in Burbank and it looked like a nice area. Is there anything not good about Burbank I should know about before signing anything?

Yo man listen,
L.A. is cool, some of the people reactin here just couldnt hack it. Find a nice spot in West LA, rent is reasonable (and in your price range), you got the 405 and 10 freeways to access all of LA, hollywood, downtown and the valley. Santamonica, venice, marina del rey- all nearby! There are lots of design studios in this area, as well as the motion picture lots. Livin in LA isnt as complicated as some people paint it to be. Im a designer, I can attest to the needs we all have. Welcome to LA.

TRNSMTR1,
If AZ is so bad and CA is so center of the universe, why is it that everyday I see more and more CA plates driving down the streets of Phoenix. LA was something like 5 years ago...now it's the same s*it everywhere you go with one exception LA and CA in general reached its top during the internet boom and now is suffering big time. THe thing is a lot of CA companies work with AZ companies because AZ is state in expansion and no taxes when you hire out-of-state company. So there is no real reason to live in LA, right? It's the same thing everywhere. Scottsdale and Tempe are as interesting as places in CA a lot of 18-19 year old hotties too.. :) ASU rules!

Venice Beach is where I spend my time.

AZ is all beach and no ocean. Something doesn't seem right.
