never been out of work so don't know what the deal is. never felt safe in my current employment so what benefits would i be able to claim if the worst came to the worst...?

LoL.. that's another reason to NOT move to Haringey. I was made redundant last year, was completely out of work for a few months, and tried signing on. This was March - July 2002.
I'm still waiting for my fucking housing benefit to come through. I got £42 or something basic benefits, but the incompetant fucks that they are (I'm still bitter, you may notice) only managed to pay me a week and a half's housing benefit. As a consquence, I'm refusing to pay my council tax, and am probably going to get shafted very, very soon.
Anyway. If you succeed, you can expect the £42 a week minimum, and a large chunk of your rent, based on a number of factors. For instance, they may send someone around to appraise your property vs the amount of rent you hock up.
You'll not have any problems if you're of foreign origin. Not prejudice, just an observation.

it took 5months for my housing benefit to come...(this is over 2yrs ago) and if your over 25 I think your allowance will be about £56pw!!!

I collected for almost 1 year and a half in NYC just after 9/11, it paid me $365 but ran out, it's not a good thing, especially in NYC

i got about 425 every 2 weeks. better than little part-time gigs.
mine ran out right before christmas, already had the extension. things suck right now, still no job.
