I'm burnt out on America... so... on a whim, I've decided to head to London solo from February 24th to March 5th.
I've never been there, but I've been intending to go for quite some time, and I've managed to fit it in between the end of one job and the beginning of a new one, which works out nicely.
Anyway, for any of you who are from London, or familiar with London... would it be possible for you to recommend some decent places to go? I'm not going there to party or to be a stupid naive American tourist (visions of fanny packs come to mind) - just looking to hit some shops and bars that mimic my laid back lifestyle here in Minneapolis. No agenda, no itinerary, just a lot of walking and train hopping to scope out any spots that anyone here might mention to me.
Cool shops, bookstores, art exhibitions and galleries, pubs with pool tables, places that Marcus Intalex might be found mixing, small local shops, design stuff, etc etc etc.
And if any of you feel like taking a night off and letting me buy you a pint or three, by all means, let me know. I think I'll pick up a prepaid sim card for my S/Ericsson t68i (you can do that, right?) when I get in, and I'll be staying somewhere in or near Picadilly (hey, it's centrally located).
Also, I plan on taking a lot of digital pictures, because we just don't have that kind of architcture/atmosphere over here... so anyone who might be willing to let me borrow a USB port to transfer pics onto my external HD would be paid back in some form or another (want fonts?).
Just kinda looking to get the hell away from here for a bit, take a few deep breaths, and drink some beer. If you want to know more about me or what I'm into, don't hesitate.
Many thanks.

If you want to take some photos try canary wharf area loads of good architecture and the underground station is good. Also try the british musem as the roof in the central court yard is amazing! The New Tate is worth a look and you can walk down to see the millennium wheel from there...
Enjoy!!

haveing lived in London for 8 years now, I still never get bored of walking around...
If you can walk everywhere, thats the best way to view London, as it is any city

Yep canary wharf and the jubliee line esepcially north greenwich/southwark stations for photos. also go to greenwich for the views and the laser that marks out the meridain line after dark (stretches 31 miles) go shopping in convent garden/neal street and around the back of carnaby street (newbrugh street) as everyone has said go drinking in old street/hoxton area. cafe kick and the pool bar are worth checking as is a night at fabric in clerkenwell. go for a walk around kensington to marvel at the old houses and go to the serpentine gallery in the park. Go on the millennium wheel, have a look round the city and st pauls.
enjoy it.

ohhhh the aquarium is excellent! they have big shark tanks, and a stingray pool where you can stroke the rays!
they are kind of bristly, in case you are interested.
