I don't think there are too many things worse than doing a project for someone you're related to. Somehow I’ve talked myself into agreeing to do a website for one of my uncles, some auto and truck parts place.

From past experience, I foresee a nightmare and possible ulcer heading my way. Just preparing the quote has already made me feel like shit.

Anyone else have experience doing jobs for family members?

not family but friends... i could only imagine family being worse... keep it bizness... and make that your first point... give a good deal, but be over explanitory... likely they dont know your area of expertise anymore than you know car parts... explain, explain and then explain again... and if you are getting cash...get it upfront... you dont want money issues to be a factor.... good luck...

I'm doing a job for my sister's husband this coming week. Im dreading it too.

Be firm and clear about deadlines and make sure you got everything b4 you start. Family tend to procrastinate a lot when it comes to bizz.

Remember "multiply by three". If you think you can do it in a week. say you can do it in three weeks.

I've done several jobs for relatives and I don't see the big deal.

I get more respect of my opinion from relative than clients that think they know everything.

I have always had very flexible timelines with relatives.

I have always been paid on time and often given extra money/gifts.

Sure I've been asked to re-do things, ccan I see this another way, what do you think abotu changing this.. and I've always handled it the same way as with clients. Talked it over and educated them and things have always worked out fine.

My Dad wants me to do his website and his words were "just tell me what will work best and let me know how much it will cost and take your time, no hurry". I told him I'd start it middle of the year and he was fine with that.

Maybe I have either abnormal relatives or abnormal clients but I'd take a relative over a client any day.
