from list of mistakes from two towers seen here:
http://www.moviemistakes.com/fil… (thanks kodap)
**********************
When filming the battle of Helm's Deep the makers used a computer programme called Massive, where each person has its own "mind", making it far easier to generate huge battles, because each person can be allocated a "side", and will then react/fight accordingly, in a variety of different styles (depending on the circumstances they find themselves in), rather than having to create/program each army member individually. The first time they used this for the battle of Helm's Deep, the defenders of Helm's Deep ran away.
**********************does anyone have any further details on this?

the reason i want to know is that i think we're on the brink of a new way to view films. check this out...
i heard that Lucas Films has a way to digitally broadcast their movies to theaters around the world (eliminating the old school reels). i'm looking for confirmation of this in another thread.
if that is true, then it is likely that movies might end up having their first variables.
think about it... let's say LOTR2 was digitally broadcasted to every theater. then it is possible that the battle scene (using Massive) could be a little different for each theater viewing. perhaps not as different as what was suggested by the first try using this software, but nonetheless unique. the plot would remain the same, but the specifics could be different.
what do you think? possible? crazy way of thinking.

fellowship points this out in the thread about lucas film digitally broadcasting:
http://www.smartcomputing.com/ed…
so that part is closer (although the article mentions it using DVD's instead of some sort of satelite or internet technology)

xrusos - I think this software is use in pre-production only and renedered once to the digital version. So the randomeness you're mentioning may not be an issue. The same way they created software for the movie Monsters Inc to render every individual hair on the big blue monster and make it wave in the wind, the rendering would then be converted to a final digital movie.

uhu, it's not exactly realtime...
I like the fact that they ran away.... cowards, but smart.

xrusos, sorry I only found this article by searching on the web this morning so you know as much as I do.
It's a real shame but WETA don't seem to have updated their site in ages...

They first used 'massive' on Gladiator.
Thank God for movies like these.
